Scathis! You have 49 out of 50 achievements for Civ Rev...dude, you're my hero. That is one tough *** game. As an achievement whore, it's been giving me headaches for a while, now.
So as an achievement whore, do you enjoy achievements that are thrown at you; ones that are fairly easy to get and you don't have to see what they are or ones that you need to look up, cuss at and then attempt over and over again?
The whore in me likes the easy ones "Press Start" - 5G The gamer in me likes a diversity. For an XBLA game such as this I'm assuming 200g. 100g of those should be attainable through sheer time: "X amount of kills with (insert class) - 6 classes, 10g each Cal Ripken: Play 100 total Matches -15g and Chuck Norris: Record 500 total kills - 25gp -- There's the 100g attainable through time. Having 1 VIRAL achievement is nice: I should've used protection - 10g: Play with a developer, or with someone who has this achievement. Then the others should be based on gameplay- types, certain unlockables, etc..
That's actually an XBox rule. XBLA titles have to have exactly 200 points and have a maximum 12 achievements.
Well slap my *** and call me pinky... I would appreciate at least ONE achievement that is just insanely hard to get.
As a game design perspective... You are saying you want 95%+ of the players to not get all the achievements?
Yes. It's nice to have the full 200/200 (or 1000/1000) but to have ONE tough achievement and to see the community as a whole have <5% total completion ...... when you get it you feel accomplished.
Hard core gamers feel accomplished, most gamers feel like it's out of their reach and there's part of the game they don't get experience. That's one of the fundamental questions you have to decide for yourself as a designer, how much of your game do you want the most people to experience?
That's a fair statement, and considering this is UberEnt's baby, I really cant tell you how to plan it. That being said, the 400 (approximately) "badges" you earn to show off should be a mix of casual, novice, pro, and expert challenges.
achievements are nice...but seriously find it sad when people go nuts over them if they don't get you anything other than something like gamer score points...
being employed full-time, father, husband, and having a life causes me to put video games on the back shelf. Being able to rack up achievement points does two things: Makes me feel like I'm accomplishing "extra" in the game, and gives me something to work towards when I feel like I'm getting bored. I'm proud of my nearly 55k gamerscore and a friend of mine (from highschool) and I have an ongoing competition...he is sitting at 68k, so I'm trying to catch up.
