[WIP][Server] Orbital Warfare Overhaul

    Yeah, both area targeting, but also counter like antinukes/other. It would only be able to fire within a certain range(pretty big though) and would be like half a nuke or something.

    Great to see someone is working on modding in more orbital!

    I love the artillery idea. I even think the bot factory in orbit could work if we were able to have a cool animation for when they drop, like in the original trailer.

    Here are some orbital units I've been thinking would be cool:
    • stationary nuke/anti-nuke platforms
    • energy/metal storage (we've got jigs, why not?)
    • kamikaze (like bomb-bots, but in space, might be cool if they could drop down from orbit to attack ground)
    • drop ships (I know a lot of talk has been given to this already)

    I was thinking about taking the jig, and making it metal only, for this mod, and bringing it in-line with the solar satellite. Thoughts?

    Definately, the jig makes them panels pretty useless.

    Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I was also thinking to maybe make it an orbital metal extractor for any planet, buildable above metal spots...

    I've actually thought about it earlier, it would be some space structure that will then extend a drill down. The drill can be destroyed, but the space structure remains and can be repaired.

    That would be much harder to implement, given the system we have for modding. It will probably just end up being an orbital mining laser...

    Thought so, this game probably wont support such a mod, so it will probably be the task of mobile anti-orbital to take it out.

    Don't know if any of the units you guys are working on are meant to do this (OP is a bit vague) but are you planning on adding in any ships that focus on taking out non-orbital units below them (especially air units) to defend teleporters you're making on the surface better and otherwise be used as support while being almost defenseless against orbital fighters?

    Yes I believe we did plan something to be able to provide some amount of defence against the air layer. Everything is still subject to change though.

    EDIT:
    Also we will be updating the OP as more things become set in stone. Personally I don't think it's a good idea to post our design doc right now as many things could change in the future.

    Petty good ship! Guess that one is the frigate, and the hammerhead the cruiser. Pretty similar to what I had in mind. Have you considered making assault transports? such as the star wars acclamators:

    Unfortunately assault transports don't work very well yet within the game, though I get the feeling that it's something uber themselves want to implement eventually. Also, I'm not really aiming for the cruiser/frigate feel, we're just trying to make space combat ships.

    Its a shame, big orbital to ground invasions would be really cool, hope that uber does something about that.

    Oh I see, space combat in the orbital layer, I've actually been thinking about that for a while, I even started a thread considering some things:

    One last thing, consider the ISa cruiser design, as its vertical it could save a lot of space if youre doing really big ships, so more ships will be able to stay in the planets orbit:

    I actually quite like some of your ideas there. The Isa cruiser design is also quite an interesting idea which I surprisingly didn't think of before. With our current models I am trying to make them all share a similar design language, so you should be able to tell what a ships role is at a glance, but you can also tell that these ships were all designed by the same faction. So I'm not sure that we'll include a ship designed around what you suggested soon, but it may happen.

    Also I may steal a few of your other ideas which you posted :)

    Thanks for posting this, as I always appreciate feedback and more ideas.

    Originally I started this custom commander just because I felt like screwing around. Not 100% sure if it'll end up being included in the mod, but I just wanted to show it off anyway. :)

    Keep in mind that this is not an ingame shot, it is just a rendered shot in maya.

    Well, lets suppose that that ship is more for orbital bombardment, cause of its vertical looks, it looks like a cannon is facing to the planet. Maybe it could be some kind of Tier 2 orbital cannon for planet bombardments.

    Maybe what you could do is adding Tier 2 orbital units (and some tier 1 too of course). You know, the actual orbital units look pretty ''primitive'', almost every thing is a satellite, and even the orbital fighter has solar plates and has more similarities to a satellite, than the type of spaceships you're making.

    so that's my suggestion, to make tier 2 stuff more like spaceships, not satellites. For example the SXX-1304 Laser Platform would be considered a tier 1 orbital unit, for tier 2 I would make a spaceship instead of a satellite, and take advantage of the ISA cruiser vertical design for it, so its like a massive cannon facing the planet. You know the Cod:ghosts Odin? some weapon like that.

    Then the tier 2 defensive units could be space stations with very powerful weapons, that could be even used to try to destroy moons that are going to be smashed into your planet, or even nuke/antinuke silos:

    And I like that commander, the armor plates/shields it has give it an interesting and unique look. not sure if you should include it in the mod, or make a mod just for it, maybe you could just add it to the overall mod in case its not big deal.

    BTW, I would both recommend cannons and missile launchers as turrets for orbital units.

    It should conform to the imperial skeleton as I built this model while constantly referring to the progenitor commander. The positions for the arms and legs are exactly the same as the progenitor (Fun fact: the legs were originally copied from the progenitor because I got lazy then heavily modified). I have not attached the bones to the commander yet though.
