Why design units?

    Two games that come to mind for unit customization that I've played are Metal Fatigue and Metal Knight. Metal Fatigue had customization for the giant mechs you could build. Metal Knight, however, had a wide array of parts that you could research then assemble to your liking.

    But both those games major feature were the unit customization. Unit customization isn't something just to be added in as a side feature.
