Gay can be used for by males an females, while Queer is for males, and lesbian is for females (Though gay is just more commonly used for males)

Both queer and gay are commonly used as an insult (Albit a stupid one) yet lesbian isn't (At least I've never seen it used as one)

OT: Has a cool anime sig.

In the predominately Catholic area I live in, both gay + lesbian are freqeuntly heard as insults for people. Just where you live, I suppose.
