Looks like there isn't going to be VOIP. His reasoning was pretty good on it: lots of people who use it are jerks. I know this from TF2 too well.

There's still good reason to have it. But I think things will work out fine anyway. It's not like its starcraft or an FPS: there should be time to use the in game chat feature for pugs.

I think the problem with most games that have VOIP is not that "lots of people who use it are jerks", it's the lack of an easy and quick way to mute those people (and perhaps report the abuse), in general games benefit from having VOIP.
If someone is being a jerk just mute him, problem solved, hell you can even have a "blacklist" he'll be muted in every game, this seems a lot more reasonable than NOT having the feature because "lots of people who use it are jerks".

External VoIP hooks to Mumble or something similar would be fine, as long as it's really easy, and Uber tries to push people in the direction of using a single VoIP program that's multi-platform and works well. I don't know what that is right now.

If they can exert a little extra effort and make use a library to make the VoIP completely integrated and seamless, as others have mentioned a well-functioning muting feature will take care of the obnoxious clients.

I would be disappointed if there were no in-game VOIP. This is a staple in today's games. Using an external program is fine, but most people will not go out of there way to get it even if there is an 'official server' to use. Some may even suffer install problems.

As far as having an easy way to mute people, put a little speaker next to their name in the scoreboard. 1 keypress, and 1 mouse click later and you won't hear the person for the rest of the game. It could be taken to another level by having a 'broadcast voice to' and 'recieve voice from' buttons in the diplomacy menu.

Take it to the next level AGAIN and let people broadcast on their webcams!

I can't tell you how many positive experiences I had with a microphone in SupCom2. Many team games with strangers were won because I was able to communicate, plan, and coordinate with my teammates. I can even honestly say that there are some people in this forum that I originally became online 'friends' with because of playing in said games, talking to them in-game, and becoming Steam friends, then joining them on TS.

Please include VOIP with one button mute!
