Planetary Annihilation is supposed to be very mod-friendly, so you could do it yourself as well I suppose.

But enslaving people and being evil is fun!

Lmao he is only poking it at me or hawk because we are the coders of the team... He does the graphics :p

Which means knight that when you ask, and you won't have to ask me much being the UEF nut I was, you better have the custom texture to go with it... Reminds me of the BO:ACU version of Billy

Considering that thanks to their total capture, assimilation, refinement and ultimately transformation of all technology into brutally efficient self-replicating mechanisms of war, The Commanders' units are now probably quite different, indeed probably completely different to the "original" designs.

Maybe they'd keep the old, original names... but that sounds like a cop-out to me :(

Since the Commanders of the current time in Planetary Annihilation's history are not soulless gas-pumps (as has been completely confirmed by Neutrino himself,) then I think it's not too much to ask for them to have a little personality and rename their stuff.

For some reason, the FA unit name that stuck with me the most was the Klink Hammer. What an awesome name . . .
Second place goes to the Ambassador, for being so ironic.

And in TA, the Millennium. A huge name to go with a huge ship.

I do hope the names in PA are distinct though. There were some names, both in TA and especially in FA that tended to be a bit bland and meld together. For example, while I loved the name Sky Slammer in FA, I always got it mixed up with the Sky Boxer.

Can we have the option to make them talk like them when you select a group of them?

    Customize-able unit names!

Every player can have their own "faction" by their names! I love this idea man!

Under each name though would be like a things saying (T3 Bot)

    Pleeeaaaaassseeee

Just because I want to put cybran style names on my units.

But honestly, in lieu of faction diversity, this is a great idea. Having a sense of identity really helps the game. I cant see how this would be hard to code, or have any negative impacts.

Yeah, it surely will be great fun to fight against a player whos units are named after various sexual organs. :p

Also it will make discussions about units on the forum much easier when nobody knows what that light fast tank ist called that is built at tier 2, but don't mistake it with the light scout tank or the frontloaded long range light fast tank.

I can see plenty of issues with this idea.

This wasn't a problem with Supreme Commander 1, but even if it will become an issue (I don't think so), an option to use custom names or not could easily be added I guess.

The names should be transparant, it should tell you something about how the unit works.

That has almost never happened though, unless you mean a generic 'Light Tank'. Which would still be in the game. Just like Supreme Commander 1. For example: if a '*name* (*role*)' format was used, it could be 'Stonewall' (Heavy Tank), or something like that.

Sure, I guess a 'Scorcher' could indicate the use of fire - but it could also fit for nuclear carpet bombers. Such names have (almost?) never told anything concrete about the unit role...?

Usually there's a subtitle under the fluff name that tells you that though, eg "Goliath [super heavy tank]".

If its called two names, one that tells me something and one that doesn't then I'm going to use the one that tells me something.

In other words it will not be called the goliath it will be called the heavy tank.

I like unique names as much as you do but having a nonsense unique name is useless, and having a nonsense unique name followed by a descriptive name is basically the same as not having a unique name at all.

The best solution is a unique but descriptive name.

The qualifier for a good name is floaty, but there's a couple of units where the unique name stands out to me more than the descriptive one, brick, titan, swift wind, salvation, that kind of thing. And obviously the experimentals apart from the random-syllables-alien-language seraphim ones

The Jethro wasn't a "descriptive" name, yet I still remember it. Neither was the Samson, the AK, the Vamp, or the Brawler... yet these names resonate with me 16 years later and I'm willing to bet a LOT of others remember those names too.

Well brick and titan implies strength and durability, and size. Swift wind obviously refers to speed and ferocity. I can't really put my finger on salvation. But the main thrust of it is they have some relation to the function of the unit.

What does samson imply? Yeah the first thing I think when I hear samson is obviously missiles. I can't even begin to fathom jethro. Brawler makes me think it's a melee unit.
