i agree on clopses first post. the Devs seem to play "okay" compared to 90% of the random players I find in games online, but they would have no chance vs experienced players like clopse, colin or maybe even me :p
They cant balance the game properly without watching replays of actual top skill level games.

The thing that alarms me about this tread is how presumptuous the pro/experienced players are that their way of using units, crunching numbers like some kind of rocket scientist so they can win instead of just feeling the game (Maybe they do that to and I'm being presumptuous, I'm opinionated certainly, but who here isn't?). You all are forgetting this game is also being made for average people too, people who may not have the skill set to abuse a unit's parameters making it OP, or the brain of Einstein after three cans of red-bull... and us average gamers (uber devs seem to fit that category) want/need a balance that fits with our skill-sets. Pros will always be able to power-game (rendering some units useless and other necessary) no matter how refined the system so please, leave it to the devs and release a pro mod if you don't like it on release.

Seems like more of a hacky fix to me. What happens if they happen to not be on your starting planet?

The competetive players are also a part of the player base you know, why shouldnt we get any say in how the game should be? Why not have it the other way round, like all RTS games out there, and have the game be oriented towards the competetive crowd and allow mods for the casuals?

Besides, only clopse looks for the abusive units (hes funny that way).

See threads complaining about nuke-anti-nuke balance

Notice how that is in the "average player base", because in most pub servers you can expect that kind of gameplay.

The elitism will always be there unfortunately. Don't be alarmed, pro players may have valid opinions but the key to making the game fun for everyone is not putting any more weight on their opinions than those of the average player. Same goes for theory-crafters too.

As a modder who did his own balancing for years my experience was that elitist players were excellent at identifying balance flaws and exploiting even the tiniest details. However, it was also my experience that despite their amazing capacity for finding imbalances the solutions they suggested were no better than the average player. Number crunching and theory crafting don't imply "fun".

What worked best for me was to listen to these players and accept the imbalances they suggested were true, but I would look for my own way to fill the hole they found, patch, rinse, and repeat. In many cases the pro-players would ask for a damage nerf or a cost increase, and they were "right" that would balance the game, but creating a new unit, power, ability, or other game mechanic was a far more rewarding development cycle, and a more enjoyable game than simply "balancing" the existing numbers until a few guys felt the units were all equal.

That's the perfect way to do it. I kind of brushed on this when explaining gunships will be pointless unless the t2 bomber becomes worse at Killing moving targets.
