The Idea of Galactic wars!

So... we're just taking planet after planet, and it doesn't matter in what order or the decisions one makes in the metagame?

Sounds uninteresting to me. Why not just forgo the galaxy overview in favor of a leaderboard? First team to reach a set lead wins? This is functionally identical to what you suggest, if it doesn't matter to the metagame whether and how you win a planet.
