You should never put your xbox in a cabinet or the back of it against a wall... your smothering the air inside it. Also get an air duster can and clean the hell out of the fans and insides when possible. Also look into getting a fan mod at a computer store to keep it cooler.

Just some tips to prolong the life of your system

Sometimes those things can backfire on you. If your Xbox isn't under warranty anymore I'd suggest opening it up and cleaning it manual, but if you'd rather not void it, Feedle's suggest of a can of air is probably the best you're gonna get.

Having any kind of objects that contains fans/exhausts and can overheat in a closed area is usually bad. Kinda just making like a nice little heat pocket for the Xbox to wallow in.

I have all the tools required to open it and such. I just didn't think it would get as hot as it did since the front door was open.

If you do, I'd highly suggest opening it, if like I said, you don't care about warranty. I have a large dog that lives with me, along with a large amount of smokers. When I opened my Xbox, there was so much dust and gunk, I was surprised it still ran.

If the Xbox is special, like a limited edition or you can't really afford a new one if it breaks, I wouldn't open it, but if not, crack that sucker open. But you don't fiddle with too much.
