It's a laptop. :) Normally I'd never buy prebuilt machines.
Though, the lesson to learn here... never buy a laptop with hybrid graphics if you want it to run Linux properly. *rollseyes*
I searched the web for a solution, but apparently, despite so many others having this problem... none of their solutions worked in my case.

That's too bad. You may just have to stick to Windows.

Linux works fine apart of this, just a little inconvenience.

    Can't say I haven't done an unnecessary bump disguised as a... not-bump. It's okay ;)

    Blood and Fire I

Eldora was never a smart girl, nor had she any talents with anything at all. She was merely like everyone else among the telian youth.

Every night, she and her mother recited the old prayers together, begging the old gods for yet another day of peace in their secluded little settlement lying far to the north, right next to the borders where Demia ends, and Madara begins.

That's how it happened the night before as well; they said the prayers before eating what little food her mother's day labor could buy, and then, they went to sleep in their beds of hay.

Her mother was working at the local horticulture, laboring all day without rest, yet, she continued to do so every single day. Eldora admired her for that, but she worried for her more with every passing day, as the emerald green of her once beautiful scales faded slowly, becoming more and more pale. Mother was only seventy, yet, she feared that she would lose her soon, and then, she would be alone.

Eldora inherited her mother's emerald skin, while her father gave her his lilac eyes.

Her father died five years earlier, while working on the fields as a laborer near the frontier. The madaran border guards mistook him for a trespasser, and a sniper shot him from a nearby watchtower. There were no investigations.

All they spoke about this common enemy; the machines that destroyed the old homeland, and forced the telians to flee, yet, the people keep on hating each-other, protecting precious imaginary lines on a map.

The machines... a lot of people in the town even believe that they don't even exist; that they were created by the weapon industry to invoke yet another war.

The morning was cold and dark, as every morning was during the long winter. She walked to school like she did every single day. Like every fourteen years old did.

The school was a long walk away from home, on top of a hill which overlooked the town, and even the border was visible from there; and the field where Father was killed.

She though it was stupid to put a school so far away from the nearest town building. From the school, the buildings in the town seemed so small, even the town hall, which from close looked overwhelmingly tall.

She was near the gates, when something knocked her down into the snow. The cold bit her face hard – it was a snowball, she realized. She gazed around to see where it may had come from, then another one hit her from behind, pushing her face into the freezing snow.

She heard footsteps in the snow; they walked towards her. The bullies grabbed her from behind, and pulled her up, turning him towards Berrz. He held a handful of snow in both hands, then he proceeded to cram the whole thing into her face. “Eat it!” he commanded. She struggled to get away, but the other two, whom she did not see held her too tight; their grips biting into the flesh on her arms. He forced the snow into her mouth, and she felt as the freezing cold touched her tongue and her throat, she had to swallow it as he forced more and more snow in.

Then there was no more snow, and he pulled his hands away from her face. Eldora then spat the last mouthful of melted snow directly into Berrz's face in her rage.

He looked deep into her eyes with those ugly yellow eyes of his, with the face of a murderer. The drops of water and partly melted snow trickled down on his dark green scales.

He turned around, then a deep voice from behind said, “Are you gonna let her go with that?”

“No,” he replied. Then suddenly, he turned back, delivering a punch to her left cheek. The other two lost their grip, and she found herself in the snow once again. As she lifted her head, she saw her own red blood in the white. The pain in her cheek burned.

“You shouldn't have done that!” Berrz yelled at her. “You shouldn't have!” Then he kicked her in the stomach. It was painful, yet, she endured, and forced herself not to cry.

As she looked around, she saw as the other kids watched, but they didn't lift a finger to help.

Another kick was delivered; it was from the fat kid, Herbert. “Ha! What a weakling!” he said.

“Don't be silly, it still moves! Hit her harder!” Garl, the third bully said. Following that, Herbert kicked her again; this time, it was one of her ribs that soaked the strike.

Berrz grabbed her, and pulled her to her feet, then pushed her against a nearby tree. He looked into her eyes, with a mocking smile on his ugly face. “Hey! Do you like snow?”

Eldora shook her head, fearing they would feed her more snow. Then he pushed her to turn towards a pile of snow.

“Because you get snow,” he said, and knocked her into the pile, then he and the others began to bury her below all that snow.

A noise of a shot fired stopped the process, followed by dreading silence. She crawled out of the snow, and in the distance, she saw a soldier with a large rifle pointed to the sky.

His name was Vugor, though she did not remember his surname. He was a sergeant. Vugor slowly walked towards the group of bullies, and everyone watched silently. In a few moments he reached closer to them. He looked at Berrz.

“Are you feeling strong now?” he said.

“N- … no sir,” Berrz replied.

“Are YOU feeling BETTER now?” Vugor said.

Berrz shook his head, “N- no.”

“Then is there any reason for doing what you have done to the girl?” the sergeant asked.

Berrz and the others didn't say a word.

    “TELL ME!” he commanded.

Eldora saw as the three tough bully shivered after the sergeant yelled at them.

    “No answer?” Vugor said. “No?”

The bullies did not say a word.

The sergeant, with a powerful swing, delivered a heavy strike to Burrz's head with the stock of his rifle. The kid collapsed in the snow with a bloody face.

“Now get away from here!” the sergeant commanded, and they ran away desperately. Then he looked at Eldora, who sat in the snow, shivering from the cold, and without saying a word... walked away.

She stood up, and cleaned off the snow from her clothes, but they were all wet and cold. She looked around, and noticed that everybody was gazing at her. She had no friends among them. She had no friends at all. “What?” she asked.

Her entire body shook from the cold, so she ran off to get in to the school building where it was warm(er).

The class room was warm, yet, Eldora shivered from the cold that her wet clothes gave her. From across the classroom, Berrz watched her with a giant wound on his face. She didn't have the time to check her own wounds, but she was certain, they were very visible as well. The teacher, however, didn't seem to care about the wounded students, neither about Eldora's wet clothes.

“... the humans called these animals 'cow', and we call them 'cow' too. Cows feed on grass, which before the arrival of humans to the planet, did not grow on New Telia at all. The humans used to drink the milk produced by cows, which unfortunately is very poisonous for us.” the teacher said. Eldora found it rather boring. Who cares about cows after all?

“... we keep them in livestock areas, just like the humans did, and we eat their meat.” said the teacher.

Eat their meat? She thought. More like; the rich people are eating their meat.

“... when the humans left the planet, they also left behind a population of various animals, including cows. All those cats, dogs, chickens, and other various creatures would not be here, if the humans did not bring them with themselves when they colonized the planet.”

Yes, yes, yes... I want to go home. Eldora thought. It was the last hour of the day, and every other kid from other grades already went home, it was only them who had to suffer an extra class of boredom.

“... as for why the humans left, well... that is another story. You will learn about it in history class.”

Probably. Can we go yet? She thought. The class bored her to death. She was about to fall asleep, when the sirens sounded in the distance.

Everyone looked out the window to see if there was anything, but there was nothing. At first, the teacher looked puzzled, then she realized; “Everyone! Make pairs, and form up in a line. We evacuate!” she said.

Everyone was trying to get into the line, but then there was a huge bang, and the ceiling and the walls collapsed, then the floor below them started falling. Everyone was flying everywhere, along with all the furniture and debris that was previously part of the building.

Moments later, she realized she was mostly unharmed, apart of a few scratches. She was lying in the snow again. She looked around, and saw bodies lying around her with blood-soaked snow below them. She saw that the ruins, that a few moments earlier was the town's school was in flames, and a large chunk of it was missing; that chunk was all in the snow in thousand pieces.

She stood up, and gazed into the nothing; trying to figure out what should she do. Then someone from nearby called for help.

“Here!” the voice said. “Help me! I'm stuck below the debris.”

She gazed around, trying to figure out where the voice had come from, then across the empty street, by a tall tree, she saw Berrz half buried below some ruins. How did he get there? She wondered.

She slowly walked there, as slow as she could, so she could watch him suffer, while he screamed at her to hurry.

    She stood tall above him. She saw that his legs were buried below a pile of stone and other garbage. He could not move. Not even his arms. She gazed into his eyes;

“You think I'm going to help you?” Eldora said.

“Please!” he begged. “I'm sorry! I didn't want to, the others told me to do...”

“The others?” she said. “Why don't they help you now?”

“I- I- … I don't know where they are!” Berrz screamed with a high pitched voice.

“Well then...” she said with a calm and satisfied tone, and turned her back.

“Don't leave me here! I'm going to die!” he screamed.

“You will,” she confirmed. Then she looked around the ground, and noticed a sharp looking piece of metal in the snow. She gazed around the area once more to ensure nobody alive was around, then reached down for the piece of metal.

“W-, what are you gonna do?” he said with a tone of fear.

She crouched down, and gazed into his ugly yellow eyes. “I always hated your eyes,” she said. Then she pointed the sharp thing close to his right eye.

“No, no! Please, don't!” he begged.

After a moment of hesitation, she pierced his eye. Berrz screamed out in pain.

“Shut up, you little girl!” Eldora commanded. She yelled at him. But he continued to scream as blood flowed out of his pierced eye. Eventually, he stopped, then he was crying.

    “You little girl,” she said.

    “#@&$ YOU!” he cursed.

“Oh, so that's how you play!” she said with a slight hint of smile, then gathered a small pile of snow below his head. He looked at it puzzled.

“Do you like snow?” she asked. “Do you like it? I'm sure you do!” she said, then she gently pushed his head into the pile of snow she just swept together. She watched as his blood slowly soaked the snow. She enjoyed it; it felt like sweet justice.

She then moved her hand away from him, and he released a painful scream as he pulled his head out of the snow.

“Oh, come on... you're such a girl!” she complained.

    “Stop, please! Stop!” he begged.

She wanted to go on and torture him further, but she realized, that her clothes were still all wet, and she shivered. The cold was biting.

She walked a few steps away, but then it struck her that she can't leave him alive. He would tell the others what she did, and they would... she didn't dare to think of what they would do.

She turned back, and walked the same few steps back towards him.

“What are you doing?” he asked with tear drops and blood mixed all across his face.

She leaned down, and pushed her sharp metal through his throat, and left him there.

She looked back, and saw him suffer as he struggled to take a breath. He drowned on his own blood. His life slowly faded away before her eyes.

She calmly walked off in the silent and empty street, where only the sound of the flames broke the silence...

Note: This is part 3 of Blood and Fire I

It began snowing. In the distance, she saw the town; many of the buildings were engulfed in flames, and voices of a battle were heard. She started running, but she got exhausted rather quick, but she kept on running. All she could think of the whole time was her mother.

Flames emerged from the ground across the borderline in the distance, forming spheres that raced across the sky, emitting a howling screech that echoed in the mountains before finally landing in the middle of the town, forming a tower of fire as buildings collapsed near where it crashed.

    […]

The town was in utter chaos. People frantically rushed all around the streets, surrounded by collapsed and flaming buildings, screaming as the rain of projectiles wrecked havoc. “Run for your lives!” a man yelled, as if it wasn't obvious, while another woman screamed and stumbled in a log that crossed her path; falling to the icy concrete, head down. She did not stand up anymore.

Eldora just kept running, ignoring the turmoil. Everything looked so different; she barely recognized her hometown.

She reached a turning, and she right away, turned right, as she always did to go home, but then, she froze in place as she faced a giant double-barreled cannon. The tank had no indication for who it belonged to; just a pale gray tank without any markings.

She realized she had to go a different way, but as she began moving, the tank fired a shot. It scared her, but it did not aim at her; it aimed to a building behind her which then collapsed as a whole. The blast was so loud it made her deaf for a few seconds, but her hearing slowly returned, only to hear the noise made by gunshots all over the place.

She found a safe path to get around the tank, a narrow street where she used to hide when the bullies chased her on the way home.

She arrived home, but the sight that welcomed her was grievous. Their house in flames and half of it in ruins. “No!” she yelled. “NO!” she yelled again, but louder. “Mother!?” she called, but nobody answered. The street was silent and empty; only a few dead bodies lied in the snow on the road, but the battle was still heard from the distance.

She looked for the door, but it was nowhere to be found; it was in the part which was hit by an artillery shell. She saw that a window in the wall, which was still intact, had its glass shattered. She rushed there, and reached in for the handle to open it from inside, then climbed in.

The kitchen tools, which Mother always organized with care, were everywhere on the floor.

She ran to Mother's room desperately, only to see the ceiling and the walls missing. The floor was covered by debris. She looked to the left, and saw Mother lying motionless by the wall. “Mother!” Eldora screamed, her face covered in tears.

She leaped across a pile of ruins to get to her mother, and crouched down, and frantically tried to wake her up, but she did not wake. Her body was cold, and she did not breathe; she was gone... passed away, and entered a better place. Eldora began sobbing.

    […]

She did not perceive time while she mourned... A few hours may had passed, she though. She wanted to stay for longer, but then another artillery shell screeched above their house, and crashed somewhere nearby with a horrible noise.

While mourning her mother, Eldora forgot about the cold and her wet clothes, but fortunately for her, a nearby flame that was burning among the ruins of their house gave her warmth for the while. She went to her room to change into dry clothes, then left the house to see if there was a way out of town, though, she'd much better wanted to die right there.

The gunshots were much less frequent by then. Perhaps, the defense forces repelled the attackers, or perhaps not, and the town was captured by the enemy. Those cursed madarans! She thought. They killed my father, and now they came to take my mother. They will pay for this. She though with anger.

After the next turning, there was supposed to be another street, but there wasn't anymore, just a large crater, surrounded by collapsed buildings and burning debris. The path was basically unusable. She walked closer, and leaned to look into the hole.

“Halt!” a voice from behind commanded. “Put your hands up, and turn back!”

Eldora did as the voice commanded. It was a soldier, who aimed his gun at her. The man smiled at her, but did not lower the aim of his gun. “Pretty one,” he said. She grasped, that it was not exactly meant to be a compliment; she knew she had to run. “Hey! Stop!” the man yelled after her, then gunshots followed... The first three did not hit, but the fourth bullet did, and the pain stabbed her shin with no mercy; she stumbled and landed in the snow.

As she attempted to arise, she saw that the bullet pierced across her left shin. She leaned to her arms, and saw the man walking towards her, while he struggled to unfasten his belt. “You aren't very bright, aren't you?” he said. “You can't run away from the bullet. You can try, but once you're in the bullet's way...” he pointed at her shin, “this happens.”

Eldora tried to crawl away from him desperately. “No, wait, don't!” she screamed.

“Oh, no you don't!” the man said, and grabbed her from behind, and turned her to her back, and held both her hands, pressing them against the ground with one of his hands. He was above her, and tried to undress her with his other hand.

“No!” she cried as she struggled to get out of his grip.

The man stopped for a moment; “What was that?”

He never saw it coming; a gunshot from the distance, and the bullet struck his head, spraying a fair amount of his blood to the snow, and even some on Eldora's clothes and face. He fell down like a grain filled bag.

She gazed at him in terror for some moments, then a hand touched her shoulder. “We must go,” a man's voice said. “Come!”

She looked up, and saw Sergeant Vugor. He tried to pull her up, but then she felt her shin hurt worse than before; she cried out a short moan of pain. “I can't,” she said.

The sergeant hesitated for a moment, then he lifted her, and carried her to where ever he was going.

“Thank... you!” she said with tears in her eyes, and then she fainted.

    […]

When she woke up, she found herself on a train. It was moving. “The railroad!” she said to no one in particular. Despite everything that happened back home, the thought of being on a train filled her with joy.

She gazed around, and found that she was in a livestock wagon. Alone... or not; she had some company in the shape of a cow.

The wagon had no wall on one side, so she could enjoy the scenery while being on the way. She leaned out, and figured there were at least ten other wagons; hers was the sixth in line from the engine.

As she tried to get on to her feet, she felt the pain in her shin, so she gave up on standing up. She checked, and saw that the wound was bandaged.

She had no idea where the train was heading, but she didn't care much, as long as she could enjoy the peace. She looked at her fellow passenger, the brown cow, and smiled...

    To be continued...

    Well...
Let us throw around some statistics then...
So far, I've released 12 episodes... let's see some numbers!!

    Total number of words: 32165
    Total number of characters: 180642
When put together, it fills 103 A5 sized pages with 2 cm margins.

Longest episode: #8 A Secret Mission, 4495 words, 24570 characters.
Shortest episode: #6 The Sanctuary, 2039 words, 11543 characters.

In the meantime, I've decided that there should be some delay between the release of the first and second part of Blood and Fire, because I felt that it would be strange if the main character suddenly arrived to the destination, right after getting up the train, so I'll put an episode in between them (maybe even two... I don't know yet.)

In the meantime... stay tuned and stuff!

PS.: If you disabled the safety mechanism of your lawn mower, remember this tiny piece of information:
The engine of the lawn mower can be started manually by rotating the blades.
Take care! This could save a finger or two.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Everything below is a subject to change. As you may notice, some of the factions don't have any description yet; those will be added in the future.

    This is mostly unfinished.

    The Telian Empire
    Estimated Population: 30 127 520 000

Before the banishment of the telian race from Old Telia, there was a single united empire on the planet, ruled by a dictatorial government.

The empire was founded following the victory of Ragnos the First, who became the first emperor of the empire. His descendants ruled the planet for the next seven-hundred years, until Stratos the Last was assassinated during a speech, leaving the empire without an heir to the throne.

Following his death, his son took the throne, and then his son after him... and so on.

Following the last emperor's death, there was a free election to elect a leader for the next ten years, and there was a period of harmony. However, during the next elections Claid Ederton attempted to claim victory with fraud, but his plans were revealed, and he was excluded from the elections. After his defeat, he bought the army; he bribed most of the generals, and overthrew the new government with a coup.

Claid Ederton formed his own government, and ruled the empire with a cruel dictatorship until the machines arrived...

Two-million telians managed to escape the planet with a human-made spaceship, that was held in complete secret for near a hundred year, and only was revealed when the situation became hopeless.

Shortly after the spaceship escaped the planet, the machines found them. About one-million of those that were on the ship managed to evacuate with smaller ships, and then fled to all directions. The others died together with the ship.

The survivors formed their alliances, based on old history, traditions, and beliefs.

There may also be some survivors back on the home planet as well, who struggle to survive after the cataclysm, the machines have created, their numbers are however shrouded in mistery.

There are seventeen known factions that have been founded by the survivors...

    Demian Federation
    Estimated Population: 237 300
    Planet: New Telia
    Capital city: Ingenti

Demia was one of the six kindoms before the Telian Empire was founded. More will be revealed later.

The president of the Demian Federation is called Norwen Ollex.

    Madara
    Estimated Population: 196 700
    Planet: New Telia
    Capital City: Pentmoor

Madara was one of the six kindoms before the Telian Empire was founded. More will be revealed later.

    Kingdom of Lyth
    Estimated Population: 159 500
    Planet: New Telia
    Capital City: Boris' End

Lyth was one of the six kindoms before the Telian Empire was founded.
    [...]

Shortly after arriving to New Telia, the people of Lyth claimed a human fortress to serve as their capital. The name of the fort was Boris' End. It is only known about its history, that it was named after a human that once lived on the planet, thousands of years earlier.

Ten years after their arrival, a man, named Tez forged a crown for himself, and claimed that he was the King of Lyth. The country was in deep chaos, so he was able to gain many followers for his claim, and soon, he overthrew the incompetent government, and became the twenty-sixth king of Lyth.

    Republic of Zeel
    Estimated Population: 130 200
    Planet: New Telia
    Capital City: New Zeel

Zeel was one of the six kindoms before the Telian Empire was founded. After the cataclysm caused by the invading machines, the situation appeared to be hopeless. Zeel was re-founded on weak foundations on New Telia, but the time did not solve anything at all. During four decades, the government filled the citizens with hope, but the reality was lightyears away from any propaganda.

The zeelian economy was slowly dying for decades, and it was only a matter of time until something triggered a war. Rodhoros and Madara were both looking at the Republic of Zeel as a potential prey, and their opportunity finally arrived...

    More will be revealed later.

    Rodhoros
    Estimated Population: 105 000
    Planet: New Telia
    Capital City: Fort Steel

Rodhoros was one of the six kindoms before the Telian Empire was founded. After Ragnos, the last king of Rodhoros defeated the other five kindoms, ending a war that lasted for over four-hundred years, he united the kingdoms, and founded The Great Telian Empire, and reigned as an emperor for the next sixty-five years.

The inhabitants of Rodhoros are called the rodhors.

    More will be revealed later.

    Teobolos
    Estimated Population: 43 800
    Planet: New Telia

Teobolos was one of the six kindoms before the Telian Empire was founded.

    Gelidus Retreat
    Estimated Population: 17 000
    Planet: Gelidus
    Capital city: Fort Chillbeak

Gelidus, a planet of ice and snow, is a mostly safe place for any telian who seeks safety, far away from the conflicts of New Telia.

There are two main fortresses on the planet, left behind by the humans who built them there for unknown reasons.
Many of the people on Gelidus were previously criminals who found it a great place to hide from justice. They are permitted by the leadership to form raiding parties, and attack other telians and claim some of their resources. They are allowed to keep a small portion of the loot, but they have to deliver the rest to the warehouses from where they are distributed. Without these raiders, Gelidus Retreat would not be able to sustain itself.

    League of Berrita
    Estimated Population: 15 200
    Planet: New Telia
    Capital City: Lynx

Back in Old Telia, Berrita was known as a group of islands, far to the south. It was the part of Teobolos. However, during the Plutonium Rebellion, they did not receive any support from Teobolos, instead, they joined their forces with the main army to fight against the rebels.
As a result, following the banishment, berritans formed their own alliance, separate from Teobolos.

They did not manage to claim a human fortress when they arrived to the planet, so they built their own city from scratch, and named it after Martin Lynx, the man who'd led the rebellion back in the days.

The alliance defeated Yesoth's army, and burned his entire kingdom to dust. Following their victory, the allies could not agree on how to divide the conquered lands among themselves; as a result, another war raised, which lasted four-hundred years, and was ultimately ended by Ragnos the First, the first emperor of Telia.

It is now ruled by a league of fanatics, who believe that the punishment, which followed Yesoth's death was unjustful, and demand their compensation.

They have no meaningful military force, they don't even have a lot of land. They claimed a single human-made fortress, and some fields around it when they arrived to the planet.

another reserved post for later use...

PS.: I really... really... really... really... really hate that ridiculous 10k character limit!!
PS2.: You may have noticed that some of the mentioned factions lact the "More will be revealed" sentence... well, imagine it's there! I had to remove from some of them because of the character limit.

According to my plans, only a few of them would truly play an important role in the story, and the others are merely there as a bit of flavor, though, from time to time, one of them may get their little time of shine.

You only really have to remember the most important ones. You'll find out which ones they are as the story goes on. ;)

The point of having so many factions is not to test your memory skills, but to try to show, that the Telian Empire was really only held together by a few patches and some thread, and was doomed to shatter to many pieces when the machines came.

Besides, the point of such lists is to help remind the readers of what's going on! Oh, and the most important purpose of it is to remind me of what's going on!

By the way... I can't really tell now for how long this story will go on, but one thing is for sure, it will go on for many more episodes, and there will be some many new characters introduced in them!
I want it to be as epic as I can make it!

The list of telian characters is also in the workshop, tho, there are currently not many of them. It is likely to come after the next telian episode when more of them storm in to the scene.

Oh, and by the way... ten points to everyone who noticed the little navigation thingies I added to each episode in the recent days, one at the beginning, and one at the end of each!

I really love all those nav links that you're putting in! It makes this seam more like a well-organized site and less like just a messy thread.
