And this is the picture I don't like. It's too colourful and not PA-Style and this is specially really diversionary.
If you zoom out and see this picture in the background, you may can't keep attention to the planets, their orbits and maybe where they are! Look at this picture you can easily overlook the planet ( more or less, but this is a disadvantage )

I'm not 100% against that, but I really would not like to see things that are so diversionary. But of course, beautiful pictures.

Yeah, I agree with FXelix.. video game visual design is pretty bad in this regard usually, they tend to go very overboard with visual elements, even at the expense of visual clarity and readability.. basically wow factor over functionality. The planets, and even more so the units, are the main course here.. they should be the focus.

    They're examples. For inspiration.

As I even said in my original post, the nebulas would need to be designed to be more in line with PA's style.

Who's saying Uber would go over board?

You guys are arguing against the bad implementation and ignoring the good side of such implementation.

Throwing the baby out with the bathwater as the saying goes.

Of course the nebulas would need to be designed as to not over power the celestial view.

No one is advocating that these be way overpowering and distracting.

Well.. in my opinion that screenshot of Eve Online kind of is going overboard. You can hardly see the planet.

Yup, but I only have the apprehension that this could be diversionary.
Nothing against uber that they are making a bad job in the visual things. No way! It's brilliant :) but if ... :)
    We'll see - what's about that? ;)

Yeah, but Brian said this was only a example - not PA-Style like.

    Totally agree.

I remember that sometimes I was just look in awe at the backgrounds in Homeworld.

In Eve seeing the planet isn't important. So they're designed that way.

As FXelix said, it's an example for inspiration. Uber wouldn't design something exactly like that.

Really, 3d would barely be noticable in real space. However, a splash generator of different, customizable, and by default highly beautiful and realistic backdrops would be neat. They could even possibly have swirls added to the images they decide to use (added after photo and in a light yet effective way)

While they can't be realistic looking because it clashes with PA's aesthetic style. Most likely throw you out of game immersion.;) It would be cool to have but it's really just polish so it can wait.

For anybody who is worried about it being too distracting. Your brain is really good at filtering out information otherwise we wouldn't be able to do anything. Also could be a option;)

too distracting? not possible! distract my opponent as much as possible, please! ...and if I get caught staring as some awesome space-scene, well, then, my bad! lol

I support awesome, gratuitous nebulaes and whatever else the devs can cook up. I say that as I trust the scenes and artwork would be consistent with the theme...

I wonder, though, how easy it would be. Would it really be all that simple to take a 2d image and have it look right as you pan around your 3d solar system?

I always liked this visualization. Maybe Planetary Annihilation could do something similar for Galactic War just to give a sense of scale.

I don't post enough to link :( but check this out.

Could backgrounds be added via Mod?

Looks like yes, but the only person that will see it is the one running the mod. this is fine since it doesn't change gameplay anyway.

Yes, of course. Backgrounds on the Space View may just be a pretty visual feature. Should be nice to have it. But I don't expect it to change the game play in any way.

    Or could they? And how?
