Solar flare idea

    Some of these threads on this forum make my soul hurt.

    Was this thread supposed to be about coronal mass ejections? A coronal mass ejection is a big bulge of high-energy particles that can cause electromagnetic disturbances. They're belched forth from the sun on a fairly regular basis. It isn't going to wipe out all life, or set a planet on fire, or whatever the hell you people think would happen.

    Solar flares themselves don't hit planets. The solar flare is what can cause a CME, not some sort of world-ending event on its own. If a planet was close enough to be actually damaged in some way by the release of a solar flare, it wouldn't be a planet anyway, since it'd have long since boiled away, having been torn apart by the sheer tidal force of the star in questions' mass anyway.
