GIMP is more powerful afaik but I don't like the user interface. Paint.net is probably the best solution for you.

What do you use to put text in your sigs?

Adobe Fireworks CS4 usually. My boss was kind enough to buy it for me and since I work at home sometimes... =P

It's a great tool for webdesign and animated gifs and I think you can even download a trial version: http://www.adobe.com/products/fireworks/

Fireworks is very useful to combine elements of a graphic but it's not really an image manipulation software, I use Paint Shop Pro for that. But paint.net should be a pretty neat free alternative for PSP. I work at my University so we get special deals for most of our software. Adobe has special offers for students as far as I know, might be worth checking them out. Or your school/ university might have special deals, I think we only pay 15 per year for one license.

K, I should get around to finishing it soon.
