Prices drop every day on thousands of consumer goods across the world, I've bought a cool jacket up the shops one day at say £90 and then seen it the next week going for £50, it's the way it works and even more so when it concerns a computer game with alpha/beta testing.

If you only want to get the game, buy the game when it is released for insane cheap $40...
For $40 you get a DRM free game, with a company that will take care of the product and release updates. You will buy a server backend that will support your online games, no cheating, no connection problems like in Supreme Commander 1 or 2.
You get even your own dedicated server software, so you can set your own internet game up or LAN game. All for $40!!!!!!!

I paid and glancingly played alpha, and I still think it is too buggy for me to really thoroughly enjoy.

Nevertheless, I like the direction it is going. I also am most interested in galactic war, so I have to be even moreso patient. I can almost taste that intelligent AI though.

I am glad how things turned out. Tons of good things about this game every day. Why get bothered over price lowering for the very last little fraction of alpha? They are basically paying more than beta for a slightly early beta.
