Good luck showing sub pixel details on individual pixels

An old idea made better - since basically those technologies have obsoleted supersampling

It takes the average colour of the extra pixels, resulting in a more accurate image. It's the same effect as AA.

Added a cropped detail shot. Left is 100%, right is 175% w/ FXAA. Notice the extra bit of green glow in the fabrication gun's crack at the center of the detail.

Is it really worth the absolutely ridiculous performance hit for a bit of extra glow?

meh... I'd have considered it if PA was a directx game, but it's not, so DX12 isn't going to bring any improvements to PA's performance.

One mod to rule them all,
One mod to find them all,
One mod to bring them all
and on the PAMM BIND THEM!
On PAMM Github, where mods lie.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Carry on topic.

    Doesn't hit me. So yes.

You may not notice it all the time, which I'm ok with, but I'd like to think it helps with immersion in games and just helps things fit together better in all games.

The glow is perhaps a silly example, but it does show that super sampling shows extra detail. The common example is phone lines or chain link fences (things we don't have in PA). With out AA they'll look like dotted or dashed lines that don't connect at all. With AA they look like a line.

if you like spening lots of $ on your graphics card: Yes certainly.
Also yeah as bgolus said, PA has not much of the "worst offenders" that usually really look a LOT better with proper AA". This image shows some comparison between some "cheap" AA mode that doesn't work on alpha textures and some other AA mode that works on them. Super sampling AA is like the best quality AA, because it works on them and a lot of other things:

I often find myself using 16x AA, because that works just as well (granted, it's also a big performance hit, but not as bad)

You're using probably referring to 16x MSAA, which is similar to the quality of 4x OGSSAA on anything that's not alpha tested or transparent. The 1.75x OGSSAA we have is about on par with 4x MSAA visually. However MSAA doesn't work in PA because we're an OpenGL 3.1 / ~DX9 class deferred renderer, hence super sampling and FXAA which works on everything regardless of how it was rendered. The more recent OpenGL 4.0+ and DX11 class deferred renderers, like Battlefield 4, support something like MSAA so they can do AA much less expensively. I've seen a lot of engines support a combination of OGSSAA and MSAA with maybe a bit of TSAA and FXAA or SMAA on top of that for good measure. If you've got the performance left, why not add a couple more acronyms?

Maybe the overall mod should be removed until the UI issue is fixed :(

setting up a new standard sure is a nice way to introduce more acronyms
