OT, but as a nerdy mental health professional I gotta respond. Schizophrenia does literally mean "split mind." However, the diagnosis actually refers to any individual that suffers from hallucinations and/or delusions as well as a whole host of other negative symptoms (flat affect, lack of response to the environment, etc.). What you are really referring to would be something like Dissociative Identity Disorder previously labeled Multiple Personality Disorder. Easy mistake to make especially considering the guy who named the illness, Kraeplin I think it was, named it as such. Also when the diagnosis was originally created it basically covered every mental illness out there and everyone was labeled schizophrenic. Things have changed a ton over time though and now things are way different as can be seen in the Diagnositic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV-TR (DSM-IV TR) and the DSM-V which should be out in the next few years. We're actually doing the pilot studies for that here at Johns Hopkins where I work.
