Free for alls are just fun. You can not expect them to be mechanically balanced for all players, so don't worry about it. Lie cheat and steal your way to victory, as long as it's in good fun.

No way! They better be mechanically balanced! What you are likely talking about is situationly balanced though...

Uh oh, let's not start this debate again. Pretty sure iron420 and I covered it pretty well in this thread: https://forums.uberent.com/threads/new-age-of-tournaments.55830/page-3#post-858517

Why is everybody in this thread so focused on lying about intel?

I have yet to lie about intel in a non-sarcastic way.

Like when a friends commander bugged out and I told him to press delete to fix it. I had no idea he didn't know that was the self-destruct command.

Mostly because what you do is so benign compared to what the rest of us do.:)

Hm. Your insistence on the purity of intention here is interesting, and it's not surprising that a lot people were having a difficult time understanding or believing you. What you're doing might be something other people do, but it's certainly not *why* other people do it. Likewise, most people will probably be similarly unable to apprehend your intentions in-game. Especially in-game.

So if all you want is a more perfect state of information for all players (thereby allowing you to better predict their decisions), would you inform another player that *you* were the greater threat, should you observe them wasting their resources on a weaker opponent?

Likely not, but without that absurd level of objectivity, you definitely *are* trying to direct your opponents, unless you also direct them toward you with an equal lack of bias. Just sayin'.

Also, if your intentions really are as stated, it sounds like what you actually need is to just turn off the Fog of War. Done: perfectly objective gameplay. Then there would be no need to inform anyone of anything, no?

As long as scouting and intel remain part of the game, however, the debate about the use of misinformation and psychological gamesmanship can and will rage on, I'm sure.

Not having fog of war creates a couple problems, which I actually made a suggestion around in my anti-radar game mode thread.

Not being able to see exact positions allows people to flank from out of radar. This forces people to choose between spread out defenses and focused ones, with various merits to both.

When fog of war is removed in its entirety, you remove that pressure.
When fog of war is in a controlled state(like in my proposed game mode), it can be used in a predictable manner to allow for focusing where the enemy is weak or spreading to force an opening.

I tend to not volunteer information about myself, but I do at times. Especially when it comes to tier benchmarking. I announce my nukes in FFA unless it's to crack a specific turtle.
