Private Match host possibilities..

Quest Wireless internet is poopy.

And I found it weird that the only Minnesotan server is way over in the southeast corner of Minnesota.

Not that I play privates. I'm just really proud of this ping.

Ping also depends on how close you are to the server doing the test, right?

If zoom's is legit we should try it. I really want to let snack host again and get some feedback from that. I thought it at the very least played as well as chron's host did and chron's pretty close to me.

Not always. The server closest to me was returning about 260ms, which is why I used the one in Chicago that was a tenth of that, even though it is three times further away. It depends on the speed of the route - usually that is closest one, but not always...

EDIT; Zooms test is not legit. He is using Comcast, and tested to Comcast in the same city. There were 0 external hops. It's like asking someone "how fast can I get to your house from where I am" when you are sitting in their driveway...

So how does having a low ping help? The lower the ping the better the connection, but isn't the better connection only for the players who try to connect to it? Outside ping depends on distance or the technically the speed of the route. (outside ping being not the one hosting, but the one connecting)

So if wildman (high ping) joined a low ping host such as lief's at 5, would it make a difference if Lief hosted or Chron hosted (10ish ping)? Or is that a matter of upload/download speed?

Or does the low ping act as a base, essentially, but not technically lowering the ping of connecting players?

After playing Halo CE on xbox connect against kids all over the world, I have experience such bad lobbies and high ping that I haven't seen on any game I've ever played.

It depends. Here is the thing - using Zoom as an example.
Zoom has a 5ms ping to his ISP. That is really good. Yes, you can use that as a baseline but that does not mean that everyone is going to get that. Because that server is so close to him, I can test against it to see what kind of connection I would get to that host.

When I test against the same server, I get 45ms (still good - any sub 100 is good). Because that server is further away from you, you might get a 90ish connecting to it. That means that I will be less laggy than you will be. It is also possible that because I use AT&T it might be slower because I need to use more hops, but someone who may be further away and uses Comcast they will still get there faster (this is a routing issue - generally you route faster within your own network because you don't need to use some elses backbones and due to the way most ISPs do packet management).

Really the only way to know for sure is to grab your ip, and have someone test against it directly. Otherwise, you are just using ballpark numbers.

More specifically, you can use your ping to your ISP's gateway servers as a baseline. That is what Zoom did, perhaps inadvertently, perhaps not. Everything else will depend.
