The point of lava is to restrict GROUND based Units and structures. Also if one considers that lava is the exact OPPOSITE of water, being incredible hot and dense, its impossible to build a boat capable of sailing on it. Thus no Lava Navy. Also a traditional Hovercraft, one that relies upon a cushion of air and giant fans to move it, would be unable to transverse such an environment due to the heat, regardless of the material used to make it. Anti-Gravity Hovercraft would, however, be capable of traversing a lake or ocean of lava. So the addition of such units is theoretically possible. Also Air and Orbital have no issues crossing Lava due to being outside the danger zone (in the case of Orbital being FAR outside the danger zone). On this issue I honestly have no true opinion, other than a desire for consistency throughout the game.

The only 'special lava unit' that I think would be interesting would be a power generator similar in idea to the geothermal powergens. You stick them on the 'shore' just in the lava, and they generate generous (compared to normal power gens) amounts of power.

Another slightly wacky one would be a defensive thing you build on the edge of lava also, which shoots blobs of lava, further than a pelter but not as far as a lobber. This would give you a strategic reason to put your base near (or not near!) the edge of lava, similar to the strategic effect of water.
