How about this one, when I tell Americans where I an from I simply say New York, instead of saying Long Island, NY. They would then say Rhode Island. Also when you say New York people think of NYC (NY City).

In my views, Northern Ireland is a separate country from Ireland. It's not part of the British Isles, but part of the United Kingdom. Therefore I don't call myself Irish or British but rather Northern Irish, which really does sound silly. Lol. :|
