So, if you've now changed your mind and are saying that Forged Alliance Forever doesn't 'split the community', does this mean you cede the point and admit that mods do not 'split the community', and that making a game mod as friendly as possible is quite awesome of Uber?

antillie man, you keep saying that but it doesn't make it any more true. In my original post I said player base fracturing was a problem in FA that was (IMO) unrelated to modding but still a problem. I really hate having to repeat myself but you guys just refuse to read up...

FAF being separate from steam causes the player base fracturing and is a problem for FA regardless if 1 of those options is a mod or not. My reasons for not using FAF are my own and no more or less valid than the reasons you choose to use it. Both matchmaking systems have their ups and downs but the fact that there are 2 is a problem and something we should be prepared to address for PA. Please stop confusing me with OP, you can read.

Since you haven't been able to refute any of the others I am going to have to disagree with you here.

That's fine. I like Steam too. But its match making options are terrible compared to a real lobby.

Actually there is an awful lot of people that feel this way about Steam. And then there is the fact that FAF is just flat out better than Steam for FA matchmaking.

This is nice idea but there are two problems with it. First Valve does not own the rights and source code to FA so they can't. And second even if they did Steam's matchmaking is not as good as FAF's.

Perhaps. But you are forced to accept Steam in order to accept the gift and that is just not right for a game who's developers did not decide to require that everyone use Steam to play their game.

You're argument only really holds water if the 2 options were exclusive to each other. I have old fashioned cases for both SupCom and FA, I have also linked them to Steam, but this doesn't stop me from using FAF.

Since it is true that would be difficult.

Sorry but that's not how your earlier post reads to me.

Agreed. But only because Steam players are too lazy to be part of the FA online player base.

I think the fact that PA will be easy to mod in every possible way combined with the fact that people will be able to run their own servers will keep this from ever becoming an issue. But if someone is unwilling to install a mod to allow proper match making then there is nothing that can be done to help them. Steam is great but its not the answer. Mods are the only answer.

    @iron420,
Don't waste your time trying to discuss it with them. I've chosen to ignore some of the member's comments for the most part, as they're (like most elitists) just arguing for arguments sake and can't tolerate other opinions that don't match their own.

While I think mods do fracture/splinter any game's online community when it comes to a unified pool of competitive online gamers, I respect your opinion that it doesn't. Thank you for respecting mine by not replying with condescension and sarcasm.

I am of the opinion that multiple planets are a terrible idea - indeed, that round planets are a terrible idea. They will make the game an absolutely terrible experience - nearly nobody will play it - and really shouldn't be included.

That may be my opinion (it isn't, but hypothetically speaking). But proof - the fact that many people play it - discredit it. I should change my opinion to be in line with reality, in that case.

Minecraft has this "problem". As long as the infrastructure for modding (modvaults, modtools) is well integrated into the game we won't have a problem.

StarCraft 1 had fully integrated campaign scenarios and StarCraft II has fully integrated mods.

I'd assume that they're going for how games like TF2 and Battlefront 2 handle mods.

If you join a modded TF2 server, you download the necessary mods right away and they become available every time you enter that server.

If you want to play a modded game in Battlefront 2 (which in most cases means simply a new map file), you can just search the file name and download it. I remember that Dannboeing made some pretty good ones.

In both cases you are still able to play the vanilla game if you want to, the mods are just extra 'spice'.

The fact that the games I host on steam are not visable to FAF players and Visa-Versa means they are mutually exclusive regardless of weather the game itself can support 2 different lobby systems simultaniously.
Just because I can't be bothered to repeat myself or re-explain things I've already gone over in length in other posts doesn't make you right by default lol. If I **** in the woods without anyone to see and blame it on a bear does that mean the bear did it? You could prove it was me with some effort but who cares, its a **** in the woods either way.
Steam uses FA's built in lobby functions. To say it's **** is to dis FA itself, but it doesn't get any truer to FA original than what steam has.
They released patch 1.6. Does it matter?

I already explained my choice for steam. to say "Steam players are too lazy to be part of the FA online player base." is closed minded and ignorant. Especaily after I have explained it several times in many ways. Thanks for the kind words omega4. I think i've made my point in this thread. I wasn't even going to comment to begin with but after reading some of the comments I just couldn't just sit back and let so many people be so dead wrong without saying something.

Because you can't possibly use both in one play session.

Just because you repeat inane babble over and over again doesn't make it any less incorrect.

That's kind of the problem. Without the GPGNet servers the built in functions aren't that useful any more.

If they want to fix the match making system it does.

Claiming that Steam can magically solve the issues with FA is closed minded and ignorant. Debate in this thread adequately proves that at least some of the Steam players of FA are too lazy to be part of the FA online player base.

    No you really haven't.

    Now that is funny.

You're welcome, iron420. You certainly have more patience for some of these members than I do.

I quickly understood that you don't believe mods will fracture/splinter a game's pool of online gamers, even though some forum members still ascribed that belief to you. You posted that you didn't agree with my opinion on this issue several times, yet some members still continued to belief that you said otherwise.

As I said, it's clear that some members like arguing for the sake of argument or intolerant of differing opinions. Others just aren't reading what others are saying. Regardless of the reasons, I don't have the patience for this so I just ignore them when it's called for.

And I meant what I said. I admire your honor in not using a service that can be and is used by software pirates/torrenters to play games that they never paid for. I feel the same way and would never disrespect developers and dishonor them by pirating their work nor willingly use a service that accepted others who did pirate a developer's software work. I would do as you have done and input my SCFA CD key into Steam to validate my purchase of SCFA and use Steam's service.

    *Waves*

Hey, Jon? Mr Jon "Neutrino" Mavor, You there?
Do you get a single penny if someone buys Forged Alliance on Steam these days?

    What about you Scathis?

Hey, anyone working at UberEnt? Do you still get money from Steam selling Forged Alliance today?

Waas... Wassat? This isn't the music industry? You don't get royalties... especially after your parent company got liquidated? You don't get royalties anyway, since you left GPG to found your own company?

    Oooh.
    Sorry I asked.

Anyways, from what I gather and Omega doesn't seem to understand is.

Steam servers do not work for multiplayer with anyone, only your friends. If you don't know anyone who has the game, you cannot play.
FAF is a fan matchmaking service made because GPG servers shut down, and allows matchmaking and w/e. It's not a pirate secret clubhouse.

    Oh, I get it.

I also get that Steam requires that you actually provide the CD key for games that you have presumably BOUGHT, not pirated.

FAF however does NOT require that you provide the CD key for games in order to use it. So software pirates can and do use its service.

I choose not to legitimize software piracy by using any service that allows software pirates to use it. But I suppose that's because I do not pirate software. I also suppose that's because I respect software developers hard work and efforts and choose not to dishonor them by stealing software EVEN IF they no longer receive money/royalties for their work.

You see, it has everything to do with having principles, which is something that some members here clearly don't understand. Principles like paying for something and not stealing it.

    Can you say the same?

What you choose to do is up to you.
