I've had relatively good success with this technique actually. Yes it's not reliable, but letting your ally kill your economy is not going to help you win either. Note that the aim here for doing this is to win the game, not to avoid hurting peoples feelings.

yeah, I'll be honest with you here, when in that tight spot all I've resorted to is using team chat but I've had very very moderate sucess with this.
