HEY, are you "for" or "against" people suggesting that Monday Night Combat is a Team Fortress 2 clone?

The bots in MNC are more like the creeps in DatA or Demigod though from what it looks like. (For those who don't know DotA/Demigod: They spawn in your base and move towards your opponents base, killing everything they encounter on the way. Your job is to roast the other team's toasters and use your own push for the enemy base.)
Scathis, do the teams get defense towers too? Oh, and what about control points with buffs like in Demigod? I know that was added by Frogboy but it was great on larger maps to focus the attention on certain points (the HP flag was terribly OPed though...) :D

After playing MNC at PAX I can most definitely say this is not a TF2 clone. Uber has taken the best parts of a number of games and made something amazingly awesome.

The game combines the best parts of TF2 and Dota (or HoN/LoL... I don't judge) but it is clear that Uber isn't slapping features from other games onto a generic shooter (what I would define as a "Clone").

Uber has definitely refined what they like from these games and added some amazing strategy and a high degree of polish, and after playing at PAX MNC is my most anticipated shooter of 2010.

When you play a clone, you know it. A cloned game feels like a shallow imitation of it's original. It feels like the designers tried to re-make the other game with slightly different graphics.

MNC is not a clone of any game I've ever played. It shares some game DNA with TF2, but it is it's own game. I'd say it's got some DNA from: TF2, DotA, Demigod (duh), Tower Defense and [insert your favorite 3rd person shooter here]

And here is the key, all of THOSE games got their DNA from even older games. There are few totally new ideas in anything (games, movies, books, TV, politics etc.) There are however well designed collections of these ideas. A good designer figures out how to pull them together, smooth the edges, make it fun and package it with good presentation. This process, if done right, makes something unique and new.

    MNC has done this.

PS: For instance, would you call Avatar a Dances with Wolves clone? I'd say, hell no. It uses some similar concepts, but Cameron did a wonderful job of making it his own, and therefor new.

I think our grappling stuff is pretty darn original too.

After playing this game extensively at PAX I can undoubtedly tell you that this game is NOT a TF2 clone. Does it share a little flavor with TF2? Yes it does, but even those bits that it does share are twisted and morphed in a unique fashion.

    Good artists copy.
    Great artists steal.
The best artists change...and that is exactly what Uber did. They took some very basic elements from TF2, some more from the MOBA genre, stuck them in a blender with all sorts of crazy awesome ideas, and came out with a fantastic game.

I agree, I absolutely love the grapple! Nothing is quite as satisfying as flipping over a gunner and giving him a first hand (or foot in this case) introduction to the pointy end of my dagger to the face.

You guys officially have a fanatic. (HINT: His name starts with "H" and ends with "ildogen")

I've always summed it up as "MNC is what happens if Dota and TF2 have a sexy robot baby with laser vision and the awesome cranked up to 11"

Nice, now is that base-10 "11" or binary "11"?

Thread is slightly old but it's best place to leave my feedback about "TF2 clones" and all that, as someone who has played TF2 since mid 2008 and still love it today I have to say that so far from what I have seen, MNC may share a few similar styled themes but all it carries it's own charm. The most obvious and first thoughts about TF2 are that the team look like they are from a comic and are orange/red themed, oh and the class based combat I guess but many many games have used different classes for a long time.

Enough of that, the game looks great and i've been waiting for this since it was first announced, knowing it's now only about 4 weeks away is awesome! I keep learning new things about the game every other day like only a few days back I found out about the whole gold/silver/bronze skill tree by using brands, makes me want the game even more!

Oh and I live in Reading currently :p sent a good 5 years away learning art and 3D game stuff but now i'm back here, all the same as ever. Scathis you should check the Oracle shopping centre out, rather impressive but expensive.

That makes no sense because Battlefield 1942 or 1943 was made way before TF2 came out so I don't see how Battlefield is taking this from TF2. And that Battlefield has class system and they just went with it even up to Bad Company 2
And battlefield heroes is more like a combat arms clone, buy your guns for like 1 week and their gone. I can see why you might think this, but that's just because of the artstyle.
