Is the OP being sarcastic? Or does he just know absolutely nothing about game development.

you guys, he has a point, the response time IS low, they DO need more servers and optimizations.
they're doing just that : releasing version .1 will allow people to get cracking on the server code.
not really considering 1.0 is thundering nearer and nearer. I'd rate optimization as priority N°1.
Annnnd I was hoping to be the first to quote this here but you beat me to the punch.

Has it really been 20 days? It does feel it. I find myself booting the game everyday to see if it has been patched. But I don't really want to play until at least something is done.

Just have too wait it out with everyone else and watch some of the metabolical experimental games to tide me over.

When players in any game say "lag" they really mean one of kazillion things. Options include:
    • Consistently low client side frame rate
    • Intermittently low client side frame rate
    • Slow response from server to client originated user input
    • Missing updates due to server side bandwidth throttling
    • Missing updates due to slow server side connection
    • Missing updates due to slow client side connection
    • Slow gameplay due to slow sim on server
The full list is even longer than that. And each one of those cases of "lag" can be caused by multiple types of problems.

The point to all of this is that there isn't a single cause of all "lag" in PA. Any instance of lag could be from any one of those things. Or even a combination. So it's not something that will be fixed with a single change.

The good news is that performance is something that has been and will continue to get better update by update. I think players who have been active since alpha can attest to that fact. There have been huge strides made in the past few months and there's plenty more to come.

Yup! It's a process. The game gets better every day. STAY TUNED FOLKS. (Also, Forrest, you lost the bet bro time to get a piercing...)

I was about to say just this. Performance HAS been improving, it's just that the scope of the game has been increasing as more features become live, like multi planet starts and such. People are putting the game under more strain, and so noticing lag more. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I already suspected much of what you said was the case, and am more than happy to wait for things to improve.

Quote: Why does the next balance patch take so much time? How is the community supposed to help test if the iteration of changes is so slow? At the current speed it will take years to achieve what you want to have.
Why dont you let the community solve your problems? Just tell exactly how the game should be played and people will solve it way faster than you ever could.

    Thats not attacking Uber????

No, it isn't. They're saying that the community could be faster at balancing if given the tools; it's a reasonable point. Honestly, they might be right. The community would probably be able to playtest iterations and balance faster than Uber could, simply because the community is much bigger than Uber is. This is something that Gabe Newell has talked about before, as the community behind valve games has a history of out-performing the devs in terms of content creation.
On a related note, I doubt the devs can get nearly as much out of a few internal playtests as they could get releasing experimental balance builds and getting feedback for the same reason.

Community patches like this however would be highly fragmentation-able, and might well end up producing 4 or 5 resulting balances based on personal opinion.

Which might fragment the community to playing the 5 different versions of the game.

Which is why I personally don't think it's a good idea. Public experimental builds, however, are another story.
