What Uber has done is actually very smart and it is a good sign that Uber knows what they're doing. The thing is that Art is expensive, it costs a lot more than many people give it credit for and it is arguably the single largest cost associated with creating units/factions. What Uber has done is when planning the project out they figured that doing 2 factions with and depth would have cost too much, not to mention the extra burden of balancing them. So what they decided is they would make a single faction that has more depth then 2 factions would have. Think of it this way, instead of doing 2 factions with 50 units each, they are doing a single faction with 80 units instead.

They didn't go with a single faction because they're lazy, they did it because they knew given their constraints if they tried to do multiple factions the end result wouldn't have had as much depth or been as compelling as what they could do for a single faction.

Beta! The weapons don't look like much, but they function as they are supposed to so far, as we get more units we'll also get more new weapons types too. Visual assets are pretty expensive as explained above and weapon FX are a part of that. They'll do as much as they can with placeholder stuff to make sure things work and once they're confident they do the 'final' FX.

There are so many assumptions here I can't really address it in a single post. If you're really curious about stuff like this I suggest searching for and reading all the various threads we've had about orbital(primarily recent threads from the last few weeks) to get a better idea how it will/could work.
