Yeah, I would definitely twist it to do both in the background options files...

but if I had to choose, I would still turn those captions on for tank or gunner. I suppose at least that would add some drawbacks, so I would agree with that.

    I have a better idea.

Make the Assassins cloak silent. This solves the problem completely.

I really just said it for the reaction it would provide.

Though i don't really see why the assassin has to be both partially visible and audible. It's already easy enough to fend one off unless they get the drop on you.

The hum is required so that we can defend from a rear attack. The partial visibility is to force her to be sneaky. I think they have the assassin just right RE: stealth.
She's not easy to play at all but I've seen good assassins do amazing things.
Making her easier to play would make her too powerful or she'd need her "skill cap" to be brought down (which would be a real shame) for balance.

The spacebar will defend against most rookie/mid level assassins regardless of if they make noise. People that bunnyhop all over the place will deter an assassin and it seems to be the most popular method for countering them, not the cloak hum.

I also hate the phrase "skill cap". Just throwing that out there.

Yeah, me too. That's why I used inverted commas, but as a concept it does have a certain validity to it.

    Those inverted commas...

    1) Aren't commas, but double commas, if you will.

    2) Are called Quotation Marks.

Normally I am not a grammar nazi. Don't mind if you don't use it, but don't funny the name up to hell.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_mark
"Quotation marks or inverted commas (informally referred to as quotes or speech marks) are punctuation marks at the beginning and end of a quotation, direct speech, literal title or name."
I don't mind if you grammar nazi things but at least check your facts first. :p

Okay folks, settle down. Don't make me call the "Jackbot" in here.

    Oh, i'm so clever.

But yeah.. In all honesty the classes are mostly fine as they are. And i don't like the potential for captions to give away the fact i'm around.

Yeah. Even though a caption would help me (I always get jumped by 'sins) I think you'd have to be super careful about how you implement it so as to not impact her effectiveness.
Although at least some captioning should be done to make the rest of the game more accessible for some.

I think everyone who wants to reply to this should play for at least 1 hour without sound first.

But this problem is not limited to deaf people.
Being unable to understand English is the same as being unable to hear it.
Captions for just a few specific things not only help people who cannot hear, but also those who are weak in English. Having lived overseas for many years I can testify that most non-native speakers can read English better than listening, especially when Mickeys voice is (appropriately) drowned in reverb and filled with slang/fast talking.

All of my ex-girlfriends could read better than listen, so when I didnt know how to say something in Japanese, Thai, Laotian, or Chinese, I could simply type the word on my PC and they understood after reading it.

Additionally, localization is much easier if you have captions. It is perfectly acceptable to have captions in several languages with voices only in English. This is how movies are frequently watched anyway, and many games have done this.
The advantage that Monday Night Combat has is that there is so little to caption. It would be fairly easy to reach a much wider audience.

    .....No, i'll be good.

In all honesty i'm okay with subtitle options for annoucements, but not things that if used could alter the games balance. Announcements about the annihilator, or shields, overtime, bullseye, characters yelling out bot names etc, All of these fine and should be an option. I love subtitles anyway as it means i can always know what is being said, regardless of noise, audio levels or hard to understand speech.

I think a vibration output when an assassin is near seems fair, periodically not constantly, that'd make it slightly difficult to distinguish between damage being taken and whatever other instances cause the controller to vibrate

Whats the go with insulting the OP, no one gets personal at others for winging and bitching about other stuff wrong with the game.

Only problem with that is the fact this is the PC forums and many(most) people don't have mice that vibrate ;P

Offtopic: *shudder* can you imagine what people would do if their mouse vibrated? I've heard enough stories about the vibrating harry potter broomsticks...

Ontopic: what about the edges of the screen getting slightly blurred when a humming assassin is close? And i mean _slightly_ ??

Is the OP or Uber even reading this anymore are are we just discussing this for pure intellectual reasons now?

Go ahead and put in the Assassin Hum as a caption, I wouldn't mind. Why? Because while they might know the assassin is around, they don't know WHERE. Those of us with headphones know exactly what I mean. Assassins who've had me find them via sound know exactly what I mean. I really don't think the Assassin hum as a caption will have that much of an impact. Especially when there's a chance it will get lost under the barrage of under captions that will likely be going across the screen.

Localization is a nice touch, but not 100 percent necessary. If you hear certain sounds or read certain words attached to certain actions long enough, you start to learn it. I believe it's called the "immersion" technique for those who activly try to learn another language. I myself have picked up a bit of the Russian language by playing a ton of Bad Company 2. I hear certain russian phrases and I've learned they can mean things like "enemy spotted" or "I've been hit" or even "I just downed that stupid American". Heck, watching a lot Anime has allowed me to pick up on words like "Baka". My point? Localization is good and I approve it, but it shouldn't be as high up on the priority list as bug fixing as the language barrier can be worked around. Especially when the game offers great visual cues as to what is happening anyway.
