You keep claiming a relationship between the presence of sequels and how successful a game is. There is no such relationship. For example, the studio that made Homeworld 2 was bought out a year after it was released, by the rival of the company that owned the Homeworld IP; this effectively ruled out any further Homeworld games until several years later when they finally acquired the IP. That's when Homeworld: Shipbreakers was announced. So lack of Sequels is not an indicator at all of success.

As for popularity, one game does not make a genre popular, and popularity of genres changes over time - RTSs used to be extremely popular, but now not so much.

Thanks for bringing this post to my attention! :)

Hey! I'm one of the guys on that team and actually wrote that blog post.

You're right, we didn't go into much detail on why we believe our game will be an exception. We've hinted at some features we're going to be incorporating here and there, but are keeping a lot of it under wraps.

We have a bunch of different plans to prevent this from happening, and we're keeping it under wraps for a variety of reasons. The two main reasons are that the game is still changing quite rapidly, from a mechanics and visual aspect. So before we start showing images of stuff, we want them to look closer to the final product. Two, is hype. We're gearing up for a Kickstarter campaign and really really want to try and maximize hype an excitement after the KS campaign has launched.

Let's see... what are we ready to reveal...

Well, like I said in the blog post, recon will be very important. Yes, all games have fog of war, but we'll have varying levels of fog of war and recon ships meant to better see through that fog. For example, you'll be able to use long range scans to see that there are enemy ships way far away, but you won't be able to see what they are or how many they are. It could be one frigate, or it could be an entire fleet with capital support. When you get closer, you'll be able to see the quantity/types of ships, and when you get closer, you'll be able to see the weapons. At least that is our current plans.

Many of the other things for creating terrain will revolve around how the solar system is structured and how players travel around the solar system.

Beyond that... we're still not quite ready to talk about that stuff. But we do have a number of ideas.

I really hope you don't dismiss Shallow Space too early. We're putting a lot of hard work into it and I believe we're bringing some new things to the table that'll be awesome.

I really wish someone would do an RTS with customization ships (add turrets, modules, research addons ect.) and maybe a mothership that slowly progresses with addons. Would be pretty badass through a story campaign.

AI War allows for that, but only for a few units in the Ancient Shadows expansion(Hero unit and Modular Fortresses). It's not PvP, but it's the closes thing I can think of with real time controls.

    that is so WOEFULLY wrong.

Blizzard had LEGIT NO IDEA it would turn out like it did. they planed for absolutely none of the "micro" that was INVENTED by the PLAYERS of that era to exist.

I've written on this extensively in the past, here's one such example (sorry @squishy ^~^') : https://forums.uberent.com/threads/my-two-cents-on-pa-meh.64503/page-4#post-1007111
well I can't say you've come to the wrong place then ....

homeworld 2? in particular the Complex mod. play it it's EXACTLY what you say.

I couldn't really get into AI war. Not sure if it was the fast gameplay or overly complicated mechanics. I'll probably give it another try later down the road though.

Meh, I don't like mods for skirmish. I'm only really interested in a good sold single player campaign.

Star Ruler doesn't have a campaign. But it does let you build ships that are LITERALLY THE SIZE OF SOLAR SYSTEMS. It's like Just Cause 2, it goes from awesome to utterly hilarious.

suit yourself. you're really missing out. ;) as I said "in particular" the complex mod. but it's not an obligation. Homeworld 2 features ship and mothership modules stock.

Homeworld cataclysm does exactly this :) you start out with a mining ship and it slowly transforms into a full on combat based mother ship :)

I love cataclysm, I think it's pretty underrated in the Homeworld series. The story is pretty good, maybe not quite as good as Homeworlds but it's pretty up there. I love the epic feeling of slowly progressing from a minning ship into a full scale battleship. Glad you enjoyed it! Wish it was getting remastered as well but they lost the code :(
A lot of the Homeworld 2 moders have said they will port them over to the new engine. I will probably try it out then, along with battlestar galatic and starwars ;-)

Every game can be a better game with a Star Wars mod.

no game has a better star wars mod than homworld 2 :) has anybody tried that thing?

blew my mind. they even split it into two different mods, one for the three first episodes one for the three last.

But the Skyrim one lets me grab people with the Force and throw them off mountains...

Is it bad that my favourite method of dispatching enemies in video games is fall deaths? I always giggle with a sadistic glee...

yeah, HW2 star wars mod tramples that, takes a pee on it then proceeds to get elected president of the world then skyrocket into the sun and blow it up with it's awesomeness. so no. :p I don't think skyrim's star wars mod has got anything on HW's
