It basically is Star Control 2, with the 2d ship combat and the strengths over weaknesses rock-paper-scissors style. But the single player is like an "adventure" game, where in a large star map filled with many territories of other alien life, you have to rebuild up an alliance to win against an alien species that has already once before conquered nearly every species in the map. You do so by various means, like flukes, intimidation, appeasement, trickery, outright force, ambushes, and blindsided attacks. To build strength besides making allies though, you have to start off by slowly traveling back and forth from earth to other star systems and collecting minerals from planets with collection ships sent to the surface and maneuvered around hazards.
