Don't you have to drop it to do any actions?

not to my knowledge, but anyway after a while you get a miner's helmet, lanterns, etc

The torch just takes over your hand slot, so you can't chop down trees and such, but when it turns dark you don't like die immediately.

Hell, if I'm really far from home, I keep equipping and unequipping it to reset the timer of the Grue. Fortunately though, I found a dead adventure with a Miner's hat.
