    Planetary Hatilation

With mod support, how long do you think it'll take before this happens?

Quality posting (both of them) from Mr. Golus. There's a reason why I love UberEnt.

How long does it take to export from max and import into your map editor? :)

Well, I would like to see both.

A bi-weekly new unit free to download for everyone, spices things up a little to integrate the use of the unit into your strategy - so long as the unit is not a new wall! I remember that in TA! Never again, please!

Then a paid for expansion $5-15 ball park with new game play options, but also a chunk of new units, new planet types (sea world, orbitals etc.) If 75% of users get it great (not sure what is typical on expansions). But, limit matches online with folks who bought it.

Repeat. I am going to guess at most 2 expansions, before the engine is need of a big upgrade - PA2 anyone! Ideally, that would not be the case, but that is just observational, and as a developer, I know we like to do new stuff, instead of tweaking / extending old stuff :D

Also, I am happy to deprecate old units, if new ones can replace them, if a new gunship is built which is similar to an existing one, but balances thing out, the remove the old one, nothing wrong with that. Also, tweaks to exiting units is good - though I guess that comes under the term of patching.

    DLC - Downloadable content.

If you are against it, how do you plan to get the game?

After all a game is downloadable content, so to say that DLC is bad is to say that you shouldn't be using the internet at all, because you refuse to download any content.

Because, while you're technically right, DLC is commonly known as 'small updates / add-ons for a small cost'. Which I hate.

Its the age of DLCs now, i wont be surprised if Uber adopted the DLC format. I really hate DLCs. Peeps always argue "its a skin pack DLC, you don't have to buy it". If its your favourite game, of course you'll buy it.

DLCs are like paying for something via installments, you get content bit by bit, but buy with interest, much more expensive then buying the expansion with one lump sum. Money milking ftw.

Depends on the pricing, and what the product is.

For instance in AOE online, I love the idea of having one faction free, with others available to buy.

But things like golden shells in world of tanks is stupid.

An expansion pack could be a DLC. All that means is you can't buy it retail, only in download form.

Also the supcom2 DLC had more than one unit, it added more units to each faction as well as new and bigger maps.

    CORE CONTINGENCY.

That was a great (un)downloadable content.

Having millions of tiny DLC instead of a large expansion pack is like blowing a big nice planet into millions of little useless pieces.
Plus it's becoming a pain in the *** to collect them all in case of reinstallation on a new computer.

I'd prefer old'n'good expansions. DLCs is a highly efficient money extraction method, while expansion is a real addition to a game. Pack of DLCs costs 2 times more than expansion with the comparable amount of content. Also, DLCs commonly lack integrity, they're just a set of inconsistent, separate additions, while expansion is a evolution of a game as a whole.

The problem with any sort of DLC and/or expansions in a highly multiplayer setting such as PA is that it is too easy to split the community if the changes affect gameplay. The moment a subset of players decides the DLC or expansion isn't worth their time, the number of effective players drops.

This is less of an issue with expansions, which tend to be larger, one-time investments, but again, it depends on the players acquiring it to maintain game balance.

So while DLC and expansions may be a good short term solution to Uber getting a rolling income for the game, they will never be ideal for a healthy, long-lasting game. (Especially if the DLC route is taken.)

I suspect that Uber is planning to approach PA closer to the way Valve does with games like TF2 and Dota 2, except with an initial purchase requirement. This provides a steady income, but the balance of the game. and community unity is maintained.
