OOoohhhh boy, where do I begin?

I'm a total hardware head. I love tinkering with hardware, building systems, and helping others do the same or find a prebuilt that best suits their needs (a last-resort option because the things are 99.9% of the time very overpriced). The complexity is a joy, not a barrier. I follow all the trends and news in the industry and I'm the go-to guy among my friends for hardware-related tech support and purchasing advice. I just love it - it's really my passion.

Consoles are not as inexpensive as they seem at face value. You have to buy the machine, the television, any additional controllers, you used to have to buy a separate $100 wireless adapter for the 360, pay $50-60 for boxed games that don't come down in price for a long time, either pay a for a subscription to play online or put up with a subpar service, AND, the part that everyone always forgets, buy a separate general-use home computer. Add all that up, and an all-in-one desktop PC is often actually the less expensive option.

I right now have a tiny TV because I don't need it for anything but television. If it were up to me, there would be no TV or cable subscription at all - just the best possible internet service. So I know for a lot of people they'd have to pay for the TV anyway, but not everyone does.

The platform is much more open. One of the big reasons some people don't like Apple products is because they're so closed/first party/proprietary. Even by Apple standards, consoles are totally locked down. You have to do what the service provider says and deal with it if you don't like it. You have to play the game their way and you're restricted to the content that they choose to offer to you.

There is little a desktop computer could do to be the total opposite. You can develop, install, use, consume, create, and play anything you want however you want. Don't like the voice system built into Steam? Teamspeak! Don't like something in Fallout? Mod it! Don't like traditional QWERTY ISO keyboard? You can build your own custom keyboard layout with a tool provided by Microsoft! There are any number of different softwares and services for the same purpose, letting you choose the one you like the most instead of wishing your Xbox Dashboard had Y or Z feature - or, if you want to be simple, you can just use the popular common one that's easy to find. Anyone can publish anything they want for free or next to free and update it without paying 5-digit fees to the platform provider. You can even completely ditch the OS if you don't like it and install a new one without hacking the system.

To tie it all together, if you want a simple gaming experience similar to Xbox Live, then Steam offers everything that XBL offers (on the gaming front, not the multimedia front - but you seriously have the rest of your damn computer for that) and more features that are only feasible with a KB&M, PLUS the in-beta Big Picture Mode that gives it a controller- and TV-friendly UI.

tl;dr: Consoles are deceptively expensive to the point that computers can often be the less expensive choice. It's a versatile, open platform. Some people love the complexity and wealth of options - but there are also lots of basic mainstream options even to the point of emulating a console for people who want it that way.

I think people also seem to forget, how can you compare a console to something that isn't?

On a side note as well like the consoles, you can't just have a tower to play game you still need to buy everything else.

Not to mention near enough everyone who ever bought a console ever had to buy a TV to go with it because they might already have one.

Don't get me wrong Pcs are great, but they're not consoles so it's funny to see people always mention how a Pc is better then one. It's like saying a laptop is better then a DS at being a better handheld console.

No its not. Laptops can't do everything a DS can. A PC can do everything a console can. Have you forgotten that the 360 is just a PC with most of the features removed? If you have the stuff to just buy a console, you have the stuff to just buy a PC.

Because consoles are dedicated gaming machines that aren't as powerful as PC's which -aren't-. You actually didn't give any concrete arguments to support your point, you just said "hurr consoles r best"
Laptops aren't handheld, they're portable. And frankly I prefer that I brought my Laptop to Finland and not my DS.

Consoles/Hand held consoles server only one purpose
PC/Laptops can do 100000x more than a console can, anyday.

    That's pretty much my point.

Pcs are far better then a console but you can't compare a Pc to a console.

as far as I'm aware gaming consoles are meant for gaming, hence gaming console.

I'm sure they didn't think about making the Pc purely to play games.

Also Kval, that's why I pretty much said a laptop is better then a DS at being a handheld. Because it's not a handheld so you can't compare it.

I'd love to have a gaming rig. But I don't sit on computer games all day so I'm not going to go out and buy one.The thing I use my laptop for now is a game every now and again or just to search the internet and watch anime. (Its pretty much anime 24/7 when ever available)

I also don't have the money to even come close to a mouse and keyboard never mind a Pc. (No job and I don't like asking for stuff, Yeah I know I have a lot of consoles but I've had them for years so they've lasted.)

I don't understand why anyone would want to be a dedicated console gamer. There's fewer options and controls in just about all of it. Sure, there have been some advancements, but you can't come close to a computer in a console without calling it a computer.

I really get upset when I see a gameplay footage of an FPS game played on a console. Those players get away with having no situational awareness because it takes effort to look around.

I don't even care much about the control issue, I just get sick of console games after a really short period because they have so little re-playability without paying for online service or being able to create/use custom content; and buying a new game on Xbox is so expensive, if I want something even remotely new I need to shell out £40
