The D-Gun in TA was actually an exceedingly clever idea, not because "gun that kills anything" is clever. But because it is an elegant solution to solving early rushes and also the issue of commander scaling at the same time using a very simple mechanic.

The D-Gun allows the commander to annihilate an early rush single-handedly. It also allows the commander to put down a tech rush, such as getting a Zeus off fast T2 and trying to kill the commander with it. The D-Gun kills in one hit regardless of the target's HP, firepower, tech level, anything.

Among serious players the mutual destruction of commanders using the D-Gun on each other stopped it from happening. But among casual games commbombing and commrushing remain issues in TA. The best solution to this is to give defensive options that are effective against commanders. The commrusher needs to legitimately lose in the face of a skilled defense that does not utilize the defender's commander.

You know, when I read "Uber Cannon" I imagined essentially the D-Gun, but with dangerous-looking particle effects and the ability to rip CSG holes in the terrain. So pretty much the D-Gun after a few thousand years of evolution.

Mind you Uber has said literally nothing on the topic of the Commander's main weapon, so we won't know whether or not there is a "True" D-Gun until they say so.
