i had this accidentally happen to me while practising against bots with a new player. it was 2v2, with 2 metal planets, both of us were on one metal planet with one AI (that we destroyed) on our planet, and another AI on the other planet trying to bombard us with nukes. then all of a sudden both of the planets smashed into eachother, because their orbits crossed into eachother, which i found strange because we were playing for quite a while, so i was surprised that it happened way later unless the orbits changed somehow, but okay.

the explosion effect was pretty lame, there was just white light and then the planets just disappeared, with the commander explosions floating up in the air. i hope they make a better effect for it.

It's normally quite good, though I'm guessing your smash was of two equally sized planets? Do a small one hitting a larger one. ;)

yeah the planets were pretty much of equal size, making eachother disappear in the explosion like shown in the OP, if the planet is smaller and is thrown at another planet then yeah both don't disappear.

It'd be cool to see the planet be covered in lava and fires before cracking apart. We have an animation for Annihilaser-ing a planet, so why not one for planet smashing?

Precisely. The death dome is gone which means that the old version of this bug is back.

It's not just a dome above the crater - it's the original planet with all obstacles. The crater only exists on the GPU so far, neither the server nor the collision detection in the client deals any respect to it.
