In that particular case, it's a matter of whether or not art should be relevant for society. I personally think an artist should just express his own individual thoughts and feelings, instead of making himself do this or that. I definitely can see a parallel with that story and European Imperialism though.

Recently read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. Good concept, but lacking in execution, as is usually the case with an author's first novel. This was the first time I read 'black' literature and I definitely want to read more.
Uhm, without having read that story, I have to ask, you do know that I mean literature written by non-white authors with 'black' literature, right?
