I imagine that if it is still in the regular capture mechanic should work well enough. Indeed, in the absence of donating units, friendly capture could stand in.

I used to love my support commander assaults on my foes in FA. Naming all my Support commanders to the same as my commander and charging in commander and supports all at once. Overcharge the crap out of the enemies units then big 'ol' commander bomb the enemies commander. I played Seraphim obviously

Assassination with the ability to gift units does have its set of issues. Namely, any form of unit loss is unenforceable. UI mods can gift everything to your allies very easily, and perhaps even automatically. The automatic thing was an option in FA, which brings us back to the original problem of comm bombing in the first place.

Comm bombing happens because a free nuke is a free nuke. You literally start the game with a walking nuke, and assassination is the only game mode where you aren't allowed to use it. Every other game mode will have the Comm's abilities weighed against his ability to go nuclear. That problem is not easy to resolve while keeping the Comm as your first unit.

Removing the starting Comm outside of assassination is, while undesirable, a fix that works forever. More importantly, it lets Comm balance be designed around the game mode where it is meant to be used, so it can't muck anything else up.

There's not too much difference between suiciding a leaderless army or turning them neutral. The former is preferable actually, because wreckage is easier to use in the long term. Neutral structures won't always be the things you want, and if they turn rogue it could create even worse issues for everyone.

It would certainly be a disincentivizer for suiciding as all your units would become a problem for your allies rather than a help.

Perhaps, but it's not really enforceable unless the death was a total surprise. Ctrl-A Ctrl-K. Problem solved.

It's also prone to all sorts of griefing, as you can turret an enemy base and assure his doom as well. Later on, an artillery piece or nuke launcher gone nuts can cause all sorts of chain reacting catastrophe (especially if it pops another Commander!). While hilarious, it's not really the best way to bring a game to a close.

Well on topic, a big crater would be really cool.

The Devs don't post until they have something to say. Their absence from this topic speaks to them not having formed a concrete decision on the direction they're likely to take yet.

so far in the Alpha they blow up with the a big blast, not as big as the one in FA but it wipes troops by the dozens off the face of the planet. I've seen 50 or so troops be killed by the blast. but they have to be within the small radius.
