I know I watch a lot of games that I don't necessarily play.

Cybran has become the most popular race by far today so interesting that you should mention that.

What was your issue with HQ's? They don't force you to build non-HQs, you know? Plenty of people play with all HQ builds and they do fine. and the tier gap has been growing smaller and smaller thanks to FAF pulling in that direction over the years. 12 t3 to take down a GC or Ythotha. Imagine that. and tier 2 has been empowered more and more of late. it used to be pretty much skipped.

heck it's waaaaaaay bigger in PA now with experimentals in and their relative lack of balance.

atlases can be taken out easily by boombots even though it requires micro .. mercies and firebeatles barely scratch GC or ythotas .. they also become useless on a fuly upgraded comm ..
granted the ares is hard to kill with anything less powerfull than levelers or vanguards but what it has in armor it actualy lacks in DPS against an army even thoughit has defensive turrets on it ... the atlas on the other hand has dps in spades with its aoe
but lacks armor and as such can be fairly easily being taken out by anything not dumb enough to enter it's aoe .. not to forget both are helpless against air .. so t1 bombers still can best an atlas and slowly but surely chipaway on an ares ..

zeuses while powerfull aoe have the least hp aswell as short range ... mass aa planes can quickly kill them ... tl:dr t1 has options for titans and titans rarely can be send alone .. they are more often a part of a troop of units ..

compare that to supcom i have never seen a player killing an experimental with anything less than t3 and they can become even more unstopable with full veterancy ...

the HQ to me is a arbitrary structure of tech progression as well as "slave"factories .. simply put it's a system i hate being there ..

I literally just got out of a Gap of Rohan game where my rushed Ythotha got obliterated by mercies alone.

that is an intentional design. Mercies are a t2 unlock while com upgrades are always late compared to your tier level. a fully upgraded com is something you purchase at the experimental stage.

.....you could still make it work though. in supcom it's always a question of being sneaky enough and having massive quantities
if you use anything other than t2 anti air vs a Soul-ripper or a CZAR you're certain to loose. EXHIBIT A

my ythotha with the mercies EXHIBIT B

Illshavoh's (t2 bot) will do just fine vs a Monkeylord. EXHIBIT C

It's definitely t2 torp bombers you'll use if you're either UEF, Seraphim, or Cybran and you want to down either a Antlantis or a Tempest (or any other mobile experimental going through the water). EXHIBIT D

Scathis is definitely well countered with firebeetles and/or t2 gunships (or t1 gunships if you're cybran) or just t1 arty. EXHIBIT E
    http://content.faforever.com/faf/unitsDB/ for unit names

and massive t1 bomber spam is still used to down any of these EXHIBIT F

What is THE hard counter to fatboys ? TML. a t2 building. I Rest my case your honor :p

I think you might have missed what I said above. using them isn't an obligation. the HQ is for all intents and purposes the factory from pre-HQ days. So don't have to mind, you can keep just playing just as you did before. it changes nothing. and it's still balanced with the new style of gameplay.

obligation comes from weither or not it is helpfull with any disadvantages... with adjancy bonuses there is no reason not to do it .. in fact if you don't you fall behind economicaly as you may consum more resources for building units or gain less mass per tick from mexxes

still i don't have any intention of getting back into FAF anytime soon .. there were so many things about it that pushed me away ...

So far all those "things" you mentioned, you were misguided about.... forgive me for thinking you continue to be misguided and you pushed yourself away while FAF was everything you wanted in an RTS.
