Probably being biased, but usually in America, watching cartoons at an adult age isn't always approved of. I feel like in Japan, anime is a significant part of culture, and not pop culture either.

More than likely just a naive opinion.

I can't enjoy South Park, Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy or Boondocks without being ridiculed? News to me.

Now I don't actually like all those shows, but last I checked none of them were considered childish(besides Family Guy, which isn't for children, but is still childish).
