Oh, nice... yep *this* could be a feature! I was already wondering how defending a planet could be made a more satisfying affair, despite no such features being in PA yet. This might be an interesting solution! Make a stack of T1-only factories arranged to output in all directions an actual thing in the game. Give it some decent defenses (at least against getting instantly killed by a rapid response by planetary defenses like nukes or aircraft), some healing nanos to support units, and maybe a large-ish personal resource storage. Maybe it could also have the ability to prepare its own (fixed target planet) launch site & single use entry vessel, so it can fly to another planet together with other invasion forces. This might enhance invasions a lot, as it could set the stage for more interesting fights. The attacker and his expensive T1 factory spires plus (potentially not so easily landed reinforcements) trying to secure & expand his beachhead so T2 units can be landed / constructed vs. the planet's defender trying hard to contain the area the attacker controls so he can get in range to topple the towers. Now, all that said, perhaps a "base in a pod" was imagined by the PA team to be used for this kind of thing. I guess it could even somehow be made small in area so it's fairly stealthy despite its production capacity. But if the invasion fails, can a pod explode in equal style? Toppling / busting towers seems just so right when you think about destruction and mayhem...
