On a completely hypothetical musing, it would be pretty cool to have a game with stealth or cloaking units where they have just enough audio to give you that "hair on the back of the neck" feel so you know when they're arround.

You have headphones with a subwoofer? The ".1" in speaker setups refers to the number of external subwoofers. For example 4.1 or 5.1 systems refer to having 4 speakers for surround with the fifth being a center channel and a single non-directional subwoofer you shove in the corner of the room. There have been a few true ".2" systems out there (two subwoofers), but these days it seems the concept has been polluted by marketing types wanting to release an updated version of an existing 5.1 system and calling it a 5.2 system like a software version, or a single subwoofer enclosure with two speakers.

Though, I can see audiophiles combining headphones and a bass speaker for the maximum purity of experience (as you can't get that rumble in your body from headphones).

I just found it a little ironic, as Sennheiser headphones are generally known for being neutral or having weak bass. There are a number of Sennheiser fans in the office, myself included, so that's not a knock against them, just a fact. I find the bass boosted sound of many of the popular headphones out there uncomfortable.

Yeah, Senns tend to focus more on accurate sound reproduction, to the point where some criticize them as being too "clinical". But then, that's the way I prefer my audio, since a lot of the stuff I listen to isn't heavy on bass. In any case, with a good equalizer, getting similar bass response to headphones that have stronger bass output is fairly trivial, as a good pair of Senns will have the frequency range to achieve it.

Huh I though the bass on them was good.
Then again I've had beats on my ears and I hated it because bass was all there was and it was crap.

Look what I found. The Smyth Research Realiser A8 headphone surround simulator with head tracking and personalized HRTF profiles.

Smyth wants to make sure that listeners aren't using lousy headphones, so the company sells a complete package with a Stax SRS-2050 MKII electrostatic-headphone system—which includes the cans and a dedicated amplifier—all for $3360.

Imagine: looking at your base, toying with your factories and something, and then hearing an asteroid entering the atmosphere behind you, so directly above your base. In traditional RTS I see your point, but I think PA could well be one game where it could work.

The Hello, Again 360° Experience is now available. It's an amazing combination of technologies. You can switch between several moving 360° cameras, rotate each of them in any direction, and the virtual sound stage will adapt accordingly. And like the Realiser A8 I showed above, it also features head tracking if you have a webcam.

My Audio setup is having some issues actually...

The game is outputting the sound effects happening in 3D space in my rear pair, while any UI sfx are actually coming from the 3.1. While a true 5.1 is not perfect, we must also remember that even if the speakers are used rarely, when they are used appropriately it really can push somebody through the screen and immerse them into the game.

Also, most music put into movies are in 5.1, they are usually not saved that way for regular listening because it requires quite a bit more space (also including requiring extra work for songs to be mixed that way).

Also how 5.1 music tends to work is place certain "back up" instruments through the surround pair while having the driving instrument/vocals through the center channel, and the main supporting instrument through the front left and right speakers.

Audio is a very important asset for a game, especially when it comes to the output, and even range of outputs the game is capable of. Most computers can downmix a 5.1 into stereo. But up-converting a stereo pair or even a 3.1 into 5.1 is difficult, and doing it at audiophile quality is impossible. Many gamers that set up a space with their 7.1 want it to work properly, so ensuring the game has capacity for PCM is kind of important, but just as important as DTS or Pro Logic 2 since many people don't use systems with HDMI Audio. However I don't have experience with encoding audio on the fly.

First off, I don't think any DTS or Pro Logic support exists. However, I believe that FMOD actually outputs in PCM automatically if the computer is capable of outputting PCM. However most people use optical to output to audio devices OR use the stereo jacks for multiple speakers, I use my HDMI audio out to have my A/V Receiver output to my speakers. Something PC gamers don't do too often, and of those that do don't always set their output and receiver to PCM.

PCM is not capable of going through optical or through the 1/8 inch matrix, at least not that I was aware of (I do know it's impossible for optical or digicoax). IF FMod automatically has PCM but it isn't being tested by having the audiophile at the office with the basically home theater setup for a work station, then it's quite possible that the developers don't know of this effect. However if somebody is aware of another way to output PCM to a 5.1 setup without HDMI Audio I would like to know, since this is a rather large pain in my vestibule.

Also to the Devs, it might be worth investigating PCM output, as your game seems to be doing strange things for me.

SO in answer to your question, it seems to be, since my rear speakers are the only speakers getting sfx from the battlefield, and the front speakers only get UI and Music. So yes it seems it can, through a setup apparently few people have, but it seems to be either an oversight or simply not worth the time to worry about at the moment.

ok, well hope this comes along it's really one of the features I look foward to most in this game.
