You're right. I did a system restore and everything works again, the source of the error remains a mystery. Thanks for the pointer, you did fix it.
Just found a file coherent_ui.log in the exe directory contains the following:
previous versions of the game worked. I removed the mods and tried again. Same result. I attached the log
