Who's played Battleship ?? Would having a Toggle-able Grid overlay (tactical overlay) on a planet in longitude latitude style with some numbers and letters as references be a cool idea ?? Just throwing this out there for the community to post back ideas and thoughts on the topic
thats what i was thinking, good for team orders, like enemy at f5, and im moving to j7 to cover his retreat.
my grid is a bit ugly. it was just a quick mock up idea but both even , grid (with nice thin anti-aliased lines ) and a ping system would be most AWESOME i like the grid idea only for a static point of reference (i know we can anchor cameras) but it would be nice to go "hey i left my commander in A6" and just be able to scroll back there without going around planet 6 times missing him .
I can't imagine they'd release this game without a ping system. The only speed bump to this idea is what to do about pings/grid references when you and your teammate are currently zoomed in on different planets. Shouldn't be a deal-breaker, but something to think about.
planets have names.. so you would say ""attack "planet name" at grid reference "A5" his commander is there""
I think having both the ping and grid might negate that problem. pinging on another planet wouldn't be useful as you wouldn't see it so using grid reference as backup for not being able to see the ping could be a cool solution. And yeah i think saying planet name then grid reference would alert team mates that your not referring to the planet they are currently on.
I think the grid idea is really nice, but not easy enough in the middle of a game... A ping system should work just fine, you could show the ping in the UI somewhere as well and when you click it, the camera will move there in an instant... that would be my idea... since we don't have a flat map anymore...
I was busy dissagreeing with a building snap grid in another thread only to see myself seeing this as really cool. Would be nice to just have a military style grid system that is purely information and no actual interaction with the game. To be able to say "they are around B-12" would be very helpful. The moment somebody holds a hotkey they are provided much better info than "uhh.mountains, its the mountany...spot. where the rocks are"
Pings showing up as small alerts on the side of the screen - as well as visuals for certain off-world events, like "Under attack on Planet X" - could help for the multiplanet problem.
*bump* This thread needs more opinions If it's not released in game, i may try make a mod for something like this and the ideas in the thread too if it's possible.
My opinion? "Don't reinvent the wheel" for the grid labels. Let's just use a well established convention such as latitude/longitude. If the labels for North/South are persistent (like the current UI). And if we have Equator and the Prime Meridian emphasized, that should be very helpful. Also, already listed under Community Suggested UI Features https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ef3DmBUsW3faaoqqmhZFgZsyO5JUXSETY5JmXLFIPlQ/edit?usp=sharing It's the 1st item under Planetary View. 2.4 Planetary View (Planar Projection) 2.4.1 Grid for Latitude/Longitude. with grid label so we can use it in conversation. Ex. "Boats in C5 need to die". (In-game toggle) Great minds think alike
p.s. The Ping System is also on the list. 4.7 Communication Panel - Visual 4.7.1 Persistence: Permanent4.7.2 Map marker “Ping” (temporary). Move, Guard, Attack (Similar to F5-57 keys in SupCom)4.7.3 Map marker ~ (Persistent with text message). (Similar to F8 key in SupCom)4.7.4 Drawing on the map.
+1. This is a great (non minimap) idea to help with the disorientation a lot of people are experiencing.
Pings please, they're easy to use, easy to understand, you can instantly communicate different ideas depending on the ping, and they can be integrated with the AI.
What about a colored ping system. in example, Green Ping = Move Here Blue Ping = Look Here/Scout Here/Assist Here Red Ping = Attack here Maybe the flashing ping marker could be a circle or flag, maybe a flag in a circle.. haha And maybe it could have a tooltip on mouse over too. -edited-- would be cool of we could edit the tooltips to leave messages on the markers for team mates, like "hold this postion"or "build a pelter here"..
I think you're referring to 4.7.3 4.7 Communication Panel - Visual 4.7.1 Persistence: Permanent 4.7.2 Map marker “Ping” (temporary). Move, Guard, Attack (Similar to F5-57 keys in SupCom) 4.7.3 Map marker ~ (Persistent with text message). (Similar to F8 key in SupCom) 4.7.4 Drawing on the map. I just pulled in those suggestions from the community. None of us as as smart as all of us
