    super low graphics:

    uber settings, without fxaa:

with uber it bounces a bit more down then with low, but the difference feels so small.
This is with all expensive mods killed, though they don't matter that much. Nothing seems to matter really that much, it's always around this. Sometimes at most 10 fps lower, very rare much better.

Why does PA care so little about all those graphical stuff?
It's always somewhat playable but never really great.

    Performance quicktool file thingy: http://nanodesu.info/stuff/pa/test/quick_2015_8_20__5.56.1.upf.zip

What is the limiting factor in this? Based on the fact that pa.exe is at a constant "slightly above 25%" it seems to be cpu. But wasn't the client supposed to multithread at least a bit for prepare gpu calls?

Though maybe I am just getting confused by the fact that the fps counter is near unreadable due to how fast it changes. A rolling average would be cool :)

I think the difference becomes more pronounced the lower spec you are.

Why not use Steam's in-built FPS counter to read it easier?

Well, the settings mainly influence GPU-memory consumption, and GPU memory is... well... if you have it, you donĀ“t really get anything for not using it!
The only setting that has a "real" performance impact is resolution scale. (what a huge surprise... :p) 50% looks (of cause) terrible, but you might try it out nevertheless...

I guess the main thing is that the basic stuff to enable the "real planets" eats up a lot of resources, both on CPU as well as on GPU side!

But hey, we might get some light into the darkness in little time---I wrote one of the guys at PCGamesHardware and they might do a benchmark session on PA.
