Welp. my favorite unit of FA was the brick. I sort of miss them. So I decided to make one in PA style (not very hard since PA stuff is blocky) here is the first result with a quick poly painting. Feedback appreciated. Once I get the first form of the regular brick done I will make several other Variants which will be based off it's design thus why it is important to get it looking as good as possible. On the to do list: Add Antenna. Add Weapon Point
You really need to look into bulking up those legs, they are way too small/thin compared to the rest of proportions. Mike
agreed but then the brick part looks too small. lol. I might have to change the leg totally. I was hoping a simple Crane outrigger style leg would work. but I might need to make it more animalistic.
Well it all depends on how you tried to fix it, if you just scaled it up then yeah it would mess up the 'ideal' proportions, but lets look at the Brick; The basic shape/size of the body/turret is good, but look at those legs, while the overall proportions work out alright, the actual design is waaaaaaay to thin, you can keep the overall design but need to bulk up the legs so they're better in proportion to the size of torso/turret. Mike
Whoa I have never seen them side by side. I did a pretty good job squarifying it from memory I definitely want to keep the outrigger style legs for the basic brick but yeah now that the body is finished I will sort the legs out for sure. Any other suggestions while we wait for version 2.0?
The Can and Sumo, with their more tapering shapes (and the Cans asymmetric turret) have a bit more personality.
..... too cruel. what about code lyoko's block? It could have been inspired by it. I think the brick looks fantastic. it' got higher poly than most other units in FA.
the good old brick, loved the walking trash bin. kill things on the ground, kill ships while walking through the ocean... he looked stupid, but he was exactly a brick. hit hard whoever laughs at him.
So pretty much a design prioritising function over form; the sort of thing an AI (with no appreciation of aesthetics) would do? Not brilliant for easy readability as a player (which is important, it is a game), however perfectly justifiable in-universe, since lack of a clear orientation or weapon mount denies tactical information to your enemies; they cannot tell if you are aiming at them or not. Plus, as a modded unit, you get slightly more leeway for things like balance or readability. Baseline units have to be balanced and readable (since they'll always be available), custom units less so, since the player can choose whether to incorporate them or not. IMO, anyway.
You do know that I'm talking about the Brick right? As in the one from SupCom? Either way it still doesn't fit, by your argument ALL units should have the same design then, they'd all be basic greeble shapes with little in terms of identifying aspects and as you rightly point out, while "realistic" is down right horribly for the game. If anything given that it's the Brick that is the odd one out is enough to show that it isn't all that justifiable. So what is the difference between a Modded unit and a Custom one? Mike
