still wasn't notified of my upgrade availability, dunno how it actually goes down. I thought it would be good to debate windows 10. Start !
huh? no. people were just about to claim transparency or blur were a microsoft invention. I couldn't let that happen, that would've ruffled my jimmies. I was using a transparency theme with blur on my ubuntu back in the day of XP. (it wasn't my main os back then I dual booted XP and used xp mainly (trust, to be specific. ahhhh the days of unnatendeds))
??.... so by that definition... no wait.... I don't at all agree that linux makes people into products. :/ I don't care about the solitaire thing either, I've never played it. it's just a funny point.
Soo, is Win 10 worth getting from Win 7 Pro/Ultimate yet? I'm just about to clone a PC and try Win 10 on it, and if I hate it clone it back... Edit: I didn't ask for a "free" upgrade of Windows. We already own a copy of the software and they're letting us upgrade it, which is neat, but if they're going to be bothersome and advertise in it, I have an issue with that. Especially since the OS itself isn't free if you didn't have Vista or higher. (Which isn't a small amount of people and groups)
I can't tell you yet. all that I know is that DirectX12 does boast significant increase in perf but then again, so far the only game that is patched to support dx12 is AOTS and the patch isn't even out. however as a linux and windows poweruser I can tell you win7 has some lackings compared to win8.1 : progressbar details and pause button (which is OP when it comes to USB keys, no other OS can do what it can do). and taskmanager, which is a tool you want to be using at all times in windows x'D
I absolutely believe you, I even know. I'm just stating that this can't be turned into a saying since linux and other examples ( I'll go ahead and cite sex : D ) break the rule.
Nvidia just released their Win 10 drivers and I literally get no performance increase (marginal decrease xD, but my testing was too limited to say for sure). I ran the Win 10 TP and have actually been pretty excited because there are plenty of features that I enjoy about 8.1, but I hate the UI for 8.1, and Win 10 is done so much better. It also has some performance improvements which is awesome. And yes, the progress bar details is amazing. I don't know if 8.1 showed the speed on a graph or anything fancy, but I like it. Also they have the 8.1 style Task Manager, which actually shows more details. I have so many reasons to want 10, but no reason to switch to it yet, when my Win 7 works so well.
http://www.computerworld.com/articl...ts-update-and-upgrade-schedule-explained.html http://www.techworm.net/2014/10/microsofts-windows-10-permission-watch-every-move.html google around.
@websterx01 as I said unless a game is developed FOR directx12 it will show no increase in perf. and the nvidia drivers are unrelated.
I think the benefit for Microsoft is in getting everyone to adapt to W10 rather than have the whole XP thing all over again. Though i wont be updating until microsoft forces me to. Windows 7 works just fine.
I'd say win 10 is worth the upgrade from a general usage standpoint. I have no idea about performance. Ctrl + v in the command prompt. Sticky edges for multi-monitor setups is great. Multi-desktop support is also here, if not perfect. Edge lets you graffiti web pages, which might be useful but for now is just fun. Have not used Cortana, can't comment. Then again, I haven't used it enough to run into real issues yet. M$ has reason to fix those fast given the Win8 fiasco though, so I'm actually confident most issues should be resolved quickly.
watch in 2020 they'll finally add support for on-desktop updates in 10 more years support for updating all installed software at the same time. and linux is the one in the stone age.
Yes, because changing a consistent CLI shell to mimic their modern GUI environment is a sign they're behind the times. I'd talk trash about Linux but it's not exactly one thing. It'd be inaccurate to generalise about it. I don't get this incessant need to mock MS. Today's topic: vi. Flawed but revolutionary editor, or an abomination against every deity known to humanity?
They day linux can *reliably and without lengthy, undocumented overly complicated hacks* run all the software I need is the day I ditch Windows. The problem is right now, despite it's many good points, Linux simply doesn't have the native software base (nor comprehensive enough support for non native software) to use as my main operating system. At the end of the day the OS is there to permit the operation of other software. Frankly I could live with MS Dos (as I did when I first started with PC's) if it ran the software I need. It's definitely improving (Steam OS for example is helping expand the native games catalog), and many older programs work well through WINE (e.g. original Total Annihilation works a treat in WINE ). Where it falls down: productivity software, graphics software, 3D Cad software, video software, music creation software etc etc. I mean *yes there are Linux alternatives* in those categories, but none of them are up the the standard of the commercial alternatives (especially with 3D CAD, blender just isn't up to engineering duties).
That just depends on your use though. I have used Linux since XP was still new and fancy and haven't needed Windows since (so 10 years ago or so?). Both at home and at work. Different people, different OSes. Linux is really shines as the programmers' OS as one example. Also, of all of the compute clusters I use, I can think of only one that doesn't run Linux, and it runs Solaris (it's really old). So it really depends on what you want to do with your PC. Writing articles is also as easy with Linux as on Windows, so productivity software is pretty good as well. But we can still merrily live together.
