Just wondering how we got so far in the future without teaching robots how to walk backwards or turn in place?

I bet the Commander could execute a bitchin' pop & lock, moonwalk 180 to put up a Metal Extractor behind him. If he really wanted to. With the appropriate dubstep/subwoofer combo upgrade.

If you continuously click behind him, he'll just do awkward turns. He has the grace of a fully loaded 18 wheeler

I guess in general I wish it was easier to orient a unit in a given direction.

The commander is afraid of tripping. If it fell over it would have a hard time getting back up, and even that's assuming it doesn't rupture it's anti-mater containment unit. Remember because it's much larger than a human it's body is under more strain.

That's why it can't walk backwards.
