Hi, which graphic card is best for big PA matches? I would like to have full shadows, full textures, and stable high fps with 4k under linux. Prefering AMD. currently with a medium old graphic card, sometimes I end up with about 8 fps. Still playable, but could be better. I am prefering AMD. Any suggestion what is important? High memory is probably not important? edit: I'll just get a rx 580 and tell the results here...
Personally for PA I would avoid AMD. The driver support for opengl has been pretty slow and bad over the years. Maybe they are in a better place now.
I received my AMD rx 580 now. Before testing, i updated my Ubuntu LTS 16.04 to Ubuntu LTS 18.04. I am using the free radeon driver, i think. result: Moire artifacts sometimes on textures, some texture areas missing/broken. My Firefox rendering is bugged and slowed sometimes... so I will need experimenting with drivers a bit. I will tell you more results and suggestions then.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 18.10 testing version. But this version broke my sound for PA. Haven't found a workaround for it, yet. Anyway, by using updated open source drivers from a ppa, the performance of PA increased. Nevertheless, there is still the use-after-free-bug, which causes wrong textures to be printed often. But its okay to play for me for now. Here is the ppa for ubuntu I used: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/ archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers My settings now: AMD RX 580, i5, 16GB-Ram, 4k PA settings: Virtual Textures: High Light: Uber Shaddow: High Environment-Darkening: Off Anti-Aliasing: Off HDR: On Resolution: 100% Mode: Fullscreen
Running this as root improves performance: echo "high" > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level and switch back to automatic power management after finishing the game: echo "auto" > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level
