oh god if that's the reference I'm thinking of right now....

Kids at my school and across america have debated about whether a random dress looks black or white or blue. Apparently it looks different to some people.

That whole thing is pretty stupid; why is it even a topic of debate? It seems many people lack the capability of simple observation.

Well, the human visual perception is really buggy. We usually do not perceive those as bugs, but they are just that, scenes or things where your visual perception fails incredible hard. There are whole books out there filled with them. Usually their title contains something with "optical illusion", but honestly they should be called error reports.

It wasn't just the US, it was all over the world.

Funny enough I just found out about it late last week..

By the way the dress is actually blur and black.

it's the goddamn epitome of stupidity. and perhaps proof that by now we're just moppets for the media to toy with.

people actually claim the pixels on their screen show up different colors when really it's just their SCREENS (not to metions 3 - 4 different shots of the dress with different levels of exposition) that are different.

    bottom line?

    We don't f**king care !!! ok??

this whole thread is so off topic I can't begin to fathom why my galactic war thread was moved to off topic.

The dress picture was just about our brain trying to be awesome and going an extra mile. Not necessarily in the right direction, tho. Can trust dem photons.

Really, the only buggy thing was the photo with it's misleading colors.

Actually it's not stupidity, it had to do with where the person perceived the dress to be, under natural or artificial light.

Its a mind trick essentially. A legitimate thing.

Also it didn't really seem to have very much media coverage, I mean.. I didn't hear anything about it until very recently personally. :l

It happened on the same day as the llama chase. For some reason that was also international news.

it did. I don't think there are that many news channels that didn't cover it.

The internet was ALL over it, like a pack of mad wolves.

And you have to be dumb to focalise on the fact that people see it different then you and think it's them not the picture.

it's not a "mind trick" , nor is it a "legitimate thing", "legitimacy" sounds tainted by the association with it.

no it's just a question of saturation and exposition.

nothing to new if you've spent your life on photoshop life me.

the different screens had different contrast and luminocity settings.

    simple enough.

bottom line if you saw the dress in person you wouldn't have to hesitate.

it's not even remotely interesting scientifically and people are calling it an optical illusion!

It's not! it's just you not making the usual effort to gauge the actual color given the luminosity in the scene. yes! usual! did you know you triangulate with your two eyes and brain on a constant basis and that that's how you're able to tell me without a doubt that a thing is far and another is near? well you also interpret colors on a constant basis!

what color is this car ? :

did you think "chrome" to yourself?

well what's wrong all the sudden? aren't you going to hesitate between that and "uhh, it has some green, some yellow....lesse a lot of light blue, and some beige, khaki......." ....like you did for the dress?

oh well I guess you're not being tricked by being shown it too close, so that you can't guess that it's a car, putting you on the right track to guessing it could be reflecting alot of light because of the metal and then finally putting together that all of those colors are there together because they are just being reflected.

Your brain does that in a millisecond.

I'm really genuinely shocked that in the case of the dress everyone seemed to have shut off their brain and decided to stop interpreting colors, because, yeah, today was brain-strike day.

A and B are the same shade of brown, need I say more?

    Edit: In case I do..
