So when it comes time to load a system, or regenerate the Beta system, what do you look for in the starting planet?

Myself, I think I like Desert the most. The pathfinding issues with Moon piss me off no end, and Metal pretty much ensures air what with its choke points and pathfinding issues. Earth has a lot of water and naval warfare has always left me cold. Lava is pointless in its current state and Tropical and Ice have more water than Earth.

That leaves Desert, a great ground war planet (until T2 air, naturally) with lots of interesting terrain. Sometimes the battlefield is open and sometimes you're fighting over chokepoints. It might just be the way the RNG has worked out for me, but I feel like it has a lighter metal distribution too, and I prefer metal light maps.

Earth and Desert are pretty much identical.

At the moment I only play on the earth biome. I have found a nice set of parameters so I end up with little water, interesting features and no parthing problems.

I also don't understand why people still play on moons.

Earth has water, Desert does not, it makes Desert 100% more interesting to me. I don't find water tactically interesting. You also get more terrain features on Desert I think, where as Earth tends to be relatively open.

Incidentally, I don't want to confuse biomes with templates. The poll is referring to templates, obviously both Earth and Desert use the Earth biome.

I'd be interested in your template settings.

I like metal due to how strategic it is what with all of the choke points.

Lava!!! I love Lava planets. They look awesome and the terrain makes for some really fun gameplay. Lots of choke points, but still lots of ways to flank.

I like the idea of Metal planets, but last I played on them, they were really buggy. Been meaning to try them again.

All in all, all of the biomes are all really all around great, all things considered.

Has Lava changed? The last time I saw Lava it was flat and virtually featureless.

I agree though that the biome variation actually works pretty well. I find the type of template really changes the approach you take and how the game plays. Though it does mean that right now I dodge out of lobbies where I see things like metal or large moons. Oh, and ones where someone has decided upon an eight planet system.

The spread of votes is pretty even though, so good job Uber I guess.

EDIT: Fired one (Lava) up in the editor. Looks nice, a sort of tropical without the navy and more raised terrain.

I seen game footage on earth planets , and lava planets
Question: is true that players used to build on lava section of lava planets in early game dev stages?

So far as I know there hasn't yet been a build where the walkable sections of the lava planet have been walkable. Thus far it's been walk on lava or lava planets disabled.

I think lava area should not be buildable ( building on lava is like building on fire)

Now that you mention it: The whole building on water thing is a bit weird as well. Is that staying in? I'd be happy if we could only build naval, AA and mex on water.

You need energy or water planets would be unplayable. Air makes sense as well, why remove a whole section of units that don't rely on land because you don't have any land.

It does look a bit odd at the moment. I would like to see more differences between land and water buildings. But removing them from play just limits options and reduces fun.

I forgot to consider that there might be random generated planets with no land at all or minimal land, so yeah, you're right. It still looks weird a bit, it would be good to have water specific models of those buildings for sure.

This is a good specific planet for 2 or 3 players. It's got a good amount of terrain features and the water acts more as a barrier than something you'd want to put ships on.

Lava planets have a lot of features on them, you just need to make sure the height setting isn't very low.

Yes it is staying in, and it should. There will be all water planets – so if you can't build energy, storage, air factories, nukes, orbital, etc – then that match will be kinda lame. Also consider mostly water planets when someone spawns in the water. The player spawning in the water would be screwed.
