I need to know some variables from you guys in order to best set up future tournaments so I will start polling you, the community directly about this.

    Weekends would make more sense.

I had an idea for possible future tournaments. Instead of joining as a team join as an individual and use a random number generator to make up the teams. That way solo players can have an equal chance of joining the tournament. Just a random thought.

If you wanted to do something like a draft tournament Stretch, that could be organized every week. Sign up all the players who are interested and form 8 teams of 6.

Weekends definitely make the most sense.

In reply to deadstretch, I feel like that would have to be a entirely different tournament, because people are going to want to play with their friends. Not a bad idea if everyone agrees to it for a specific tournament though. Maybe it could be done as some sort of draft also, but that would probably just lead to people selecting their friends again.

I was also wondering about the possibility of a slightly informal league, similar to what CAL used to be if people remember back that far. You could have (just an example) 16 teams say, and the season could be 4-6 weeks(multiple games per week), with the top 8 or 4 teams going to a 1-2 week playoff. It would be up to the teams to schedule their matches. Dunno if anyone would be interested in that, but that was the most fun I had in competitive gaming.

The only game to my knowledge that continued its competitive tournaments after GB stopped supporting it was Shadowrun. The keys are:
    1. A decent sized community (Shadowrun had maybe 100 players, 8-10 teams at times)
    2. A mature community (Average age was about 20)
    3. A website with someone to organize matchups.
We have 2 of the 3, probably even more players than Shadowrun, but most people shy away from forming teams. even in SR, 1 team ran the game and won every tourney, but it was still a fun, competitive environment. Don't be afraid of losing, just play with your friends and have a fun time.

I'm just saying if you look at the past tournament threads there were a lot of people looking to make/join a team but it never happen. Of course players are going to want to play with their friends but for every group of friends there is are even more individuals that don't get to be apart of it. I can speak of this because I am one of those individuals. You've ever been left out? It's not so much fun.

About making teams it would be easy. Give every entry a number and use a random number generator to put the teams together. The matches would come down to the teams that can communicate better, not just doing what they always do.

to be honest i don't think there is enough teams on this game for uber to be wasting their resources on organizing tournaments. i've only seen 2-3 active teams playing this game.

But once they announce the tournament the teams will flock in.

The thing is that plenty of players are attracted by authority figures organizing the tournament. They need someone to organize the tournament so they can say "Oh, he's a developer, this is legit." And then they'll sign up.

Which is sad considering how many people think they're good, play daily, and play with the same people everyday. To me, you cannot claim or think you are good, unless you're willing to nut up and play in matches that matter.

    Weekends make the most sense.

IMO, uber should prioritize fun/special rules tourneys over standard competitive games, especially with the DLC private match options. This is not to say they should not run ANY standard games, but maybe a schedule that is more like this:

    January: Standard Team Registration
    Feb: Random Draft (enter solo)
March: All same class teams (class changes every match)
    April: Standard Team Registration
May: Random Classes Option (forth coming in DLC)

    Etc.

Not saying we should be running a tourney every single month (but why not? :D), but I would produce a schedule that would accommodate both casual and hardcore players. Space out the standard competitive games so that teams have ample opportunity to form, practice, and scrim before each major uber sponsored competition. It also allows the other competitive organizations (GB, Combat Gaming, etc) to still serve a purpose between these Uber sponsored events.

In between these events, offer fun alternatives to the normal game modes we experience everyday in matchmaking, and take advantage of the new private match options!

Just a little food for thought: I have a good number of people from the forums on my FL. I've played private matches with a lot of them. Most of them have a negative opinion of competitive leagues/teams because of the attitude/personality of the few competitive players that post on the forums here. Combine this with their desire to prioritize fun/playing with fun people over being recognized as an amazing player, and you have very little crossover between the communities.

(This scenario is also hardly specific to monday night combat, but it is more of an issue with games which have smaller communities than a huge studio backed title, because it becomes tougher to have a competitive community that is meaningful.)

This is not to say that the opinions shared by a good number of forum goers is anywhere close to the opinions of the player base that does not frequent the forums, but it might be worth considering if you would like more people to be open to competitive gaming. Continuing to tell people "you aren't good if you don't play matches that matter" when people have seemingly zero interest in playing "matches that matter" is not going to convince anyone to actually tryout competitive gaming. You have to appeal to their sense of what is fun, rather than trying to convince them that their sense of fun is flawed.

We have over 200 people that requested to be in the last tournament and some that saw it after and wanted to join.

I see that weekends are in high demand and it will also help with the rest of the world joining in not just an East Coast/West Coast bracket. This also means no sleep for me ;)

something that can be really fun is having a draft pool and captains. we use to do this in an old fps game i played and we played in seasons. we select captains and then the captains rank everybody from 1 to whatever. a price is put on the players based on how they were ranked and the captains are given a salary cap. we would have the playoff matches broadcasted with 300+ ppl, it was good fun. obviously something like this would be an addition to the standarized tournaments because we know how much some people want to prove their team's worth

Is it possible to insert any sort of pop-up message when starting the game? If so, that would be great for announcing events such as a tournament. I'm sure there are lots of people that would like to participate but may never hear of it if they don't follow the forums/news.

It would be hard to pick teams, have captains, or rank players because everyone has a different opinion of who's good. I think randomly selected teams would be better. I'd even make a thread to organize it if you guys want.
