SHIGERU. MIYAMATO. DENOUNCES. CASUAL VIDEO GAMES. http://www.computerandvideogames.co...lains-nintendos-renewed-passion-for-the-core/ He then goes on to say that since Apple and Android have picked up a majority of the casual audience, Nintendo will be aiming to please more of the average/hardcore gaming crowd. Based Miyamoto is based.
It's not a very tactful way to put it, but I can see what he's trying to explain. However, it's not just "casual" games that do this. Even so, I like that we can have both challenging content and mind-numbing entertainment out there. One is not necessarily better than the other.
OP, you're not very good at creating accurate thread titles. Good hyperbolic journalism, I guess. "It's kind of a passive attitude they're taking, and to me it's kind of a pathetic thing." != gamers who prefer casual games are pathetic.
Ah, it was more of a (poor) joke than anything. That said, it goes to show that the fanbase asks for more human developers, more transparent development. But they can't take any hint of criticism or personal opinion from the developers. It's odd. I mean, there's obviously a difference between developers that are flat-out rude and instances such as this, but all are damned regardless.
Major respect for Miyamoto as a developer, but not particularly concerned with his opinion on casual vs. hardcore. If it's fun, the type of game it is doesn't matter. And what's fun to me may not be fun to him, and likely neither is fun to your average "casual" gamer, and that's pretty much fine. There's room for everyone.
Personally I wouldn't be particularly impressed with someone who said "I am the customer, entertain me". Entertainment in games comes in two parts: The game, and playing it.
seems to me (and don't take my opinion as some big deal, I may be talking out of my ***, but seems to me) like he's lived in a very closed world for a very long time, unable to contact (and thus to even imagine the existence of) the other parts of the gaming world. He must (for example) think that american-made games only touch a small public. He must not know (for example) of the success Starcraft II has had in South Korea. Thus his definition of "casual" and "hardcore" (in the gaming realm) is warped. And quite ironically so.
Clearly there is a huge market for passive entertainment. Otherwise, you can't really explain TV & movies - both of which I love. While I think it is somewhat a disservice to the medium of games to "entertain the passive", totally ignoring markets where you obviously have people who want that kind of experience is.. silly? That said, I can't imagine Uber, or myself, making that kind of passive gaming experience, but it doesn't mean nobody should.
You shouldn't be going out of your way to capture all the markets instead of focusing on making a good product for some of the market either.
To be honest, it just sounds like he understands that in order to make the best games possible he needs to focus on a certain demographic. He picked one that isn't passive, which means Nintendo will hopefully go back to the glory days of making games hard as ****.
Super Souls Brothers Dark Edition. I could have posted a picture here that would make that title even funnier but it would probably be racist. Or at least called racist.
